It's got to be the best package for use here on CompuServe. It's B+ implementation is the fastest was to nabb files from our LIBs, and it also has xmodem so it's reasonably useful on other services. But ... don't forget you can fork a shell from within. So I find myself using Sterm as a base then branching out from there. For instance: I log into a remote system in Orlando quite a bit. He supports several features that make use of Vt100 emulation. By design, Sterm doen't have that .. but nothing stops me from forking a shell and firing up OSTERM and taking care of business. Same system ... I also use KERMIT alot. Again, fork city and fire up Kermie and away I go. You need "AR09.BIN" for 6809, or "AR68.BIN" for 68K, OS-9. Look in the utilities library. Also look for "AR.DOC" or "AR.MAN" in the same library. After you download the AR??.BIN file, copy it into your CMDS directory as "AR", and don't forget to set the executable attributes. After all thats done you can use AR to extract files from any ARchived file. Files with a ".pak" suffix are also archived files, but they use the "PAK" utility. Look for PAK in the utilities section, or perhaps in the CoCo section. I don't know if pak is available as a separate binary file... it might be available as "PAK.AR", in which case you'll need to get AR first. I used cc3disk.slp at first, but when I read that I should use the IRQ version if I was using the RS232 option INSIDE the SCII. Re: modpatch and Ipatch - modpatch (supplied with OS9/LII) will patch a module in memory. This is only good for overlaying existing bytes. Ipatch/mkpatch is a pair of tools written by Bob Santy that take two different versions of a binary file, and generate a patch 'differences' file. Then, you can use Ipatch to apply this patch to other binaries. This is especially useful when distributing things like OS9 driver patches, as we can't pass out the source code, and the resultant driver might not be the same size anyway. Trot on down to some of the "ham" stores and ask around, or look on the bulletin boards that they usually have around them. One possible place is the Zenith/Heathkit store. These things are not usually advertised too well in the normal publications, but are frequently posted in the stores that hams frequent. I program with MSDOS at work and have no desire to lower myself even further. But anyway... One of the interesting things in the magazine is a cartoon captioned "OS/2 Cat ponders future lives." It shows a cat looking at a gravestone that has "DOS CAT R.I.P." on it. The bubble says "Goodbye old friend! Heck, I wonder what OS/9 will be like?" Now I planning to write a letter to the editors and tell them what OS9 IS like! The Cartoon is on Page 116 of the Premier 1990 Issue. David Nelson is the Editor-in-chief, Linda Stephenson is the Managing Editor, and Leonora Wimmer is the Publisher. The Address is The Silicon Beach Operation Inc., 1101B Eugenia Place, Carpinteria, Ca 93013. In fact they mention they have a BBS at 1 (805) 684-0589. It mentions you can send letters to the editor. Maybe I can get some experts (esp. ones that like cats hint.. hint...) to help me tell the story of OS9. A mention of OS9000 is also in order. One suggestion is to mention about the great record locking capability of OS9 Level 2. OS/2 assumes the application will do the record locking (Just what does OS/2 do to take 2 megabytes????). Of course I got a chuckle out of the cartoon on another level since DOS is not dead and it may be several years before OS/2 is an OK operating system. This very well could be when 80686 chips are out and once again an operating system is behind the level of the hardware. The same as DOS is with 80286 and 80386 systems. 73 Eric..... I read some article on why "DOS is dead or should be" that was confusing. I think it is because the person did not know the subject. Limitations of current applications were taken as OS limitations. That DOS could not handle multiple protocols. I take protocols to mean communications protocols, but even if it was data protocols I feel it is a applications issue instead of an OS issue. DOS has capability for Device Drivers, make one! You also got the impression that DOS programs have to be rewritten when new versions of DOS are released and that interrupts and data structures of DOS change often. OS/2 was presented as a OS that will not chamge. There are shortcomings with DOS, but this magazine did not mention them. Could it be that OS/2 also has the same shortcomings? I think in my letter I will mention, "Well if OS/2 will not change, then I will not use it because it's shortcomings will never go away and it will not take advantage of new stuff". DOS changed as new hardware and needs became available. I can still use wordstar written for DOS 1.0 under DOS 3.3 so what's the problem? It says on the cover that it is an independent magazine, but IMHO, it looks like something out of a PR department of Microsoft. It is also strange that there is no date on the magazine other than the "1990 Premier Issue" on the bottom of the page. I sorry to get on my soapbox, but I've programmed in enough OSs to know that no OS is perfect (not even OS9). People on this forum are Pro-OS9, but readily admit to the problems and help you get around them or fix the problem in OS9! Look at all the work that was done to remove dead code in GSHELL! At least the reference to OS/2 in the new "jargon file" seems to think so (they mention OS/2 because, they say, it's always good for a cheap laugh among programmers). Unlike most DSP applications, this is commercial and not military, and can be discussed in an open forum. We are currently in the design process for a real-time version of a system that we have developed to this point in DOS. To operate at the speed we require, the system will employ extremely high data rates (on the order of 10Mhz), and use a pipe-lined architecture. We expect that the final system will have 4-6 single board computers (680x0 based CPUs), an array processor (probably CSPI's SuperCard), and a suite of image processing boards from Datacube. We are in the process of analyzing real-time operating systems, and are considering OS-9 as our target environment. I would like to solicit comments or suggestions from anyone who has used OS-9 for real-time VMEbus based systems. I am especially interestee suitability of OS-9 for use in a multiprocessor environment. Questions such as : - Will OS-9 consume too many resources in a system where RAM and MIPS are at at premium? - How does OS-9 perform in a multi-processor environment? - Do you suggestping on the target, or is using either a DOS or UNIX based host the better method? - Are the development tools adequate, both in terms of performance and ease of use? - Are there many OS-9 drivers for such things as array processors and other external devices? I assume you've talked to Microware already (515-224-1929) and gotten some info from them... I'd also ask them for names of other developers you could call for opinions and/or help. You can also stop by their CIS display area ("go msc"). You might also talk to Mike Burgher (I believe) at Microware west coast (408-980-0201)... I think he helped develop their DOS/Uni-Bridge environments, and he'll give you a fair opinion on whether or not to develop on the target. [If you have more than one prototype, many people do. Kinda keeps you in the feel of things, and also helps you to notice any problems quicker] OS-9 is pretty resource conservative... perhaps not quite as much from first glance as some other systems, but then you usually have to write less extra code to handle things OS9 already has, for example. Never used OS9 in a multiprocessor setup, altho I've heard of machines that did. No idea about array processor drivers. Developers tell me the tools are quite adequate, altho perhaps not as fancy from the viewer's standpoint (no blazing colors/borders like on DOS computers). Function over beauty. Oh. We have a Motorola MVME147-s (68030, 8mb) in slot1 and MVME333's (68010, 512kb) in slots 3-20, all running OS-9. It is not "multiprocessor" in the sense that I believe you want - each slave is a special block device (we had to do a custom file manager) to the master (eg: /slot3, /slot4, etc) and vice-versa (eg: /host). I believe you will find OS-9 to be as good as any other "Real-Time" O.S. (psos, pdos, vrtx) in terms of performance on a target, where performance measures the drain on processor bandwidth and memory usage by the kernel and the size and speed of final binaries generated by the compiler. You can (as we did when porting Unix message queues to OS-9) compile to assembler source and then tweek that as needed. During development, however, OS-9 really shines over all the rest because you can get a shell on your target and get a lot of debugging help. I cannot tell how OS-9 will behave in *your* multi-processor environment. We are happy with ours, but, as I said, it is not what you probably mean by mulit-processor. I would strongly suggest using a Unix host for development. While OS-9 has all the basics - shell, editor, etc - I just got lots of complaints from the other developers about missing things - a good version of "vi", the shell they were used to (csh, ksh, sh) with scripting, slow disk i/o (making for slow compile times), no uucp (although TOP is supposed to fix theirs), etc. You will most likely be writing your own drivers for custom things. It sounds very much like what you are looking for. I also recall reading an article about a guy here in Dayton, OH who is into working computer interfaces for paralyzed victims. I think he is working with Wright State University, but am not sure. It would take a bit of tracking for me, and unfortunately, I will be out of town next week. If the U. W. Va. lead doesn't pan out, then drop me a note and I will be happy to do some snooping around here. Incidently, I am a M.D. working in a USAF Medical Research lab. We do a small amount of this sort of stuff for Air Force personnel, but do not have anything to offer of a general nature. Our work is usually highly specific to the individual, and very limited in its ability to be generalized. Also because of leagalities that I don't pretend to understand, it is limited to AF personnel on a case by case basis. Hope this helps and good luck!! Our hardware is all VME based, although we have our own image bus, you can't do real- time work at 20 MHz. We have our own frame grabbers, with and without real-time ALUs, FFT boards (sub-second 512x512 2D FFTs), Array processors, and lots more. Send me a mail if you're interested in literature. Just to give you a few hints about OS-9, we do all our development on our own system. Coming from VAX/UNIX is a blow at first, but the TOPS utilities (many thanks), and an OS-9 X Windows port to our CPU make it bearable. One tremendous advantage for system programmers (don't tell me you write bug free software), is the fact that normal boot time is about 30 secs. (with a CMOS ram disk of 512k its less than 5 secs). I read many a good sci-fi novel while waiting for a VAX or Unix machine to boot after lightning or bad (read my) system programming. Complaints about disk time (it can be slow) during development are only a problem for systems with limited RAM. For image processing systems with 4-64 Mb, a 1 Mb ram disk solves any caffeine overdose problems, I can't pick up my cup faster... When you're done with development, throw out the ram disk if you need to! The lack of a good FORTRAN compiler is a thorn for some of our customers, but the C compiler and debugger are acceptable, although nothing to write home about. The important selling points for us were; - 4 Gb 680x0 linear address space - uSec interrupt latency - rich process communication tools - overall OS simplicity/clarity - OS manuals under 10 feet and 100 lbs We'll never go back... #: 4962 S1/General Interest 07-Jul-90 18:39:43 Sb: #0S-9 for MS-DOS? If you use Pete Lyall's HDKIT (in the libs) to backup and restore, then yes, since you have to reformat you HD inbetween the backup and restore, and when you re-create the files, OS9 automatically makes the "new" files contiguous. What I meant is it mostly depends on how you use your OS9 system. If you use copy and file manipulation utilities that are fairly intelligent (i.e. those written by some of the users here) these utilities pre-extend the file before writing to it by finding the size of the file to be copied. This cuts down dramatically on fragmentation. Also, if one of the better make directory utilities is used that also pre-extends, then again fragmentation is reduced. In addition, setting the sector allocation size in the device descriptor has lots to do with it. But, if you have a utility that appends to a file by simply opening it and then writing, that file will become fragmented fairly quickly. Given that the number of sectors allow for in a file's descriptor sector is limited to 48, a badly fragmented file could get to the point where you can't write to it any more. I'm not sure what error is returned at this point, probably error #217 (segment table full), but I have never seen one. Files that do become fragmented are easily fixed by simply copying them to a temp file and then deleting and renaming. Now if we are talking about overall disk fragmentation, where the files become spread all around a disk, then this is a little different, but still not a problem. OS9 is pretty good in the way it finds space for a file, usually keeping everything pretty tight. I occasionally use the ramdisk program in DL 9 on my Creative Micro Systems' level two box. It's not a Gimix. Or a Smoke Signal. Or even a Hazel-whatever. And it doesn't have all those fancy input-output boards. But, it's similar. All I do is load the modules ram and r0, link r0, dmode /r0 cyl=10, iniz r0 and then format /r0 R "diskname". That gives me a 64k ram disk. The size of the ramdisk is determined by the number of cylinders I assign to the r0 descriptor (with dmode). If I want to set up a 512k ram disk I'd just change the number of cylinders (using dmode) to 80 before formatting the `disk'. Of course, I don't have that much spare memory... I believe this procedure should work with just about any OS9 computer. However, you must use a driver that takes into account the coco's 8k memory blocks. I think there's an 8k driver in the AR file. And yes, I have a coco - a coco two running OS9 level one at 2 mhz. Drop me a line if you're still interested in seeing an example of vintage 1983 technology (grin). Wendell P.S. In OS9 LII on the CoCo3, each process is limited to 64K, this includes the "system" process. Included in the 64K for the system process is the boot file. You may be able to make some changes to your system setup that will free up some more room within your system space. Unfortunately some of these changes might require removing something that you want! And remember every little bit helps, sometimes all you need to do is free up 256 bytes. You can use Kevin Darlings SMap utility to show used and available system space, sometimes his PMap is also handy. This is a partial list of things you can do: 1. Remove something from your boot file. At first this may sound drastic, but analyze what is in your boot file, and think about what you actually use. Do a "ident -s OS9Boot" to see what is REALLY in there, sometimes there are duplicate modules, which take up extra space! Someone here can help you out with what you might be able to remove, include the output of an ident (-s please!) of OS9Boot or a "mdir e" in a message. 2. Reduce the number of active processes. I used to run 4 or 5 shells all the time, this ate up precious system ram, so now I've cut it down to 3. Each process takes up at least 512 bytes. 3. If you really don't need VDGInt, then boot into an 80 column "window" and remove VDGInt from your boot file (if you want to do this, ask how). Some games and programs require a VDG screen, so make sure you really want to do this. 4. Don't INIZ any device unless you really have to. This way (hopefully) each device will only use system ram when its being used (this isn't always practical, and doesn't always help, sometimes Kevin's DDir and Paths utilities help figure out what is going on as far as open devices and system memory usage. I hope these suggestions help, feel free to ask any questions. Most of the OS9 gurus are busy working on software for the MM/1, so don't feel slighted if it takes a while to get an answer! Make sure you are actually CONFIGing and new disk or EZGENing it. To test whether this is the problem: When your system is up and running with your normal configuration and SSCART and SSC are in memory type -> INIZ SSC ECHO HI >/SSC If either of these gives a 207 or 237 error your SSCART and SSC need to be relocated. Please note that removing the ROM will not disable it due to address buffers on the circuit board. If you are unable to disable the ROM by removing jumper W3, cut the connection to pin B12 of the 62 pin connector on the CoCo XT and solder a wire between pins B12 and B11.".... I had to use the alternate method since my controller (WDXT-GEN) did not have a W3 jumper. Be aware that the pins on the 62-pin side of the CoCo XT are numbered consecutively, unlike the 40-pin side with odd/even numbers on opposing sides. The "A" pins are on the component side and "A1" & "A31" are marked. "B" pins (unmarked) are on the reverse with "B1" directly under "A1". You mentioned a "powered" Y-cable, so I assume you're aware of the need to supply 12v to the controller. If you are using an *old* RS floppy controller you may also need to modify that since they were not fully decoded and respond to the addresses $FF50-$FF53 which the CoCo XT needs. But you build that into the mappng routine itself. The DAC has what amounts to 750,000 colors due to the effect. Its about a $50 in small quanites. If you dont turn this mode on it acts just like a standard DAC. But if your building a windowing system you build the tranlation for the DAC into in and your set. It is used quite a bit in industrial and process control (ATMs, luggage sorting in airports, assembly lines for brakes for Jaguars and for telephones, controlling the Fairlight CMI) as well as in general-purpose computers (though in that area probably less so in the US than abroad--prophet without honor and all that, eh?). OS-9 probably derives its interesting qualities from Motorola's one-time plans for selling software on ROM for the 6809. (See the three-part series BYTE ran on the 6809 in the Jan-Mar 1979 issues--the first and last time they ever devoted significant space to the 6809 :-( Such software would be bought and plugged into the system by the user, who could purchase whatever he or she needed or wanted and plug it in any place in the address space of the processor, so the code had to be (1) position-independent, (2) re-entrant (since it was on ROM), and (3) recognizable by the system as code from powerup as opposed to random stuff or even whatever the memory board handed back when one referred to unoccupied space on the board! These requirements, I think, gave rise to the notion of the OS-9 module, and a lot of very nice consequences resulted. #: 6268 S1/General Interest 21-Aug-90 22:47:03 Sb: #6203-#Atlanta Fest Fm: Bill Dickhaus 70325,523 To: Kevin Darling (UG Pres) 76703,4227 (X) I just placed my order with Dave at CoCoPro, and they are still offering free fest tickets with hotel reservations. Program modules in OS-9 are essentially without exception re-entrant and position-independent, precisely so they *can* be used by multiple processes. You made me stop for a second , but nope F$Move doesn't have to be in the top vector page... only interrupt/return code does. Move shuts off interrupts, which means it can be at any location. One thing F$Move does do tho, is to assume that it's above certain logical address move areas (on the CoCo, the blocks at $A000 and $C000, I think). But as long as OS9p3 looked up to see where it had been located, I believe it could set up move areas to use with no trouble. So I still think you can replace F$Move. I do beleive it must be in an area that exists in all address spaces. Not because of interupts but because it is changing the task select register on the fly. when it does that the PROGRAM COUNTER is no longer valid, unless the code being executed is in ALL address spaces. I think that during the course of mover there are 3 address spaces in action - the source, the dest, and the system. And there is NO RAM which exists in all the address spaces, only ROM That is one reason why mover does all of its movement thru registers and why it exg B and DP etc rather than just pushing onto a stack. THERE is no RAM. be much more efficient if there were, then instead of changing address spaces on every double byte, mover could copy say 32 bytes from the from space to the stack, then switch to the to space and copy from the stack. but it cant. also note that mover re-enables interrupts after every double byte to give the system a chance to work on higher priority stuff. at least all of the above is true for the OS9-II v1.2 I have. There is 1 Reply. #: 7405 S1/General Interest 16-Oct-90 00:20:12 Sb: #7391-#F$MOVE Fm: Kevin Darling (UG Pres) 76703,4227 To: Greg Morse 72746,3451 (X) The one/two-byte mover simply replaces system logical block zero with the target block number, gets/puts the data, then zeros the DAT again (possible of course because the block at logical $0000 in system space is always physical RAM block 00). On the longer moves it doesn't flip tasks like yours must. Why not? The CoCo only has two task regs (and thus two DAT reg sets), so it can't go and allocate another task for moves. I suppose it could use the user (second) task set for moves, but they didn't. Instead only the main system task is used: It figures out the source and destination block numbers, shuts off irqs, and maps those blocks in at system map logical $A000 and $C000. Then it can copy a short burst between those blocks, reset the original system map block numbers, and turn on irqs. Then repeat, changing block numbers as user blockmap boundaries are crossed. Since the mover code is outside those two changing system logical address ranges, the code is safe. In other words, on 8K block Cocos (system map block numbers are made up for typical boot), if it needed to move data from physical block number $10 to block number $12, it would: System Map Normal Sys Set Up For Log. Add Map Blocks Data Move ========== ========== ========== $E000-FFFF $003F $003F <-- mover code here $C000-DFFF $0004 $0012 <-- destination block mapped in $A000-BFFF $0003 $0010 <-- source block mapped in $8000-9FFF $0002 $0002 $6000-7FFF $0001 $0001 (block changes temp during irq-off $4000-5FFF $0005 $0005 movement, then back to normal) $2000-3FFF DATFree DATFree $0000-1FFF $0000 $0000 So it temporarily changes the system task map DAT info in order to make two external blocks appear and be accessible for moving data around. You could definitely pull the same trick. As for a OS9P3's volatile location, you could have it check itself and use logical addresses away from itself. Does this make warped sense? Just diddling its own system map. DM3 requires vdgint since it runs in a VDG type window. GrfInt in required for any non-VDG type window. GrfInt requires GrfDrv. WindInt is a module who's command set is a "superset" of GrfInt. WindInt therefore replaces GrfInt. WindInt is required to run the Graphics Shell GShell, which comes with Multi-Vue. WindInt comes with Multi-Vue. WindInt, like it's predecessor GrfInt, also requires the services of GrfDrv. If you upgrade to 1Meg, you will need to patch GrfDrv if you expect to use non-VDG type windows and you will need to patch VdgInt if you expect to use VDG type windows. VdgInt and either GrfInt or WindInt goes in your bootlist. GrfDrv has severe physical memory positioning requirements and therefore must not be part of the OS9Boot file, but loaded in individually when GrfInt or WindInt first needs it. Multi-Vue is an additional package from RS which gives you two main things to play with... first, the enhanced Windint module to replace your current GrfInt modules (Windint adds pulldown menus, etc)... and second, the GShell (gfx shell) programs if you wish to start things with icons etc. The AR archiver program most often used here for files, is specific to OS9. It's available in Lib 9 (utils) under the name AR09.BIN and AR.DOC. We'll be glad to help with its usage. Virtually nothing here in this forum runs under RSDOS, with the exception of a tool to make RSDOS disks readable under OS9... which is what you need for transfering files using MTerm. Look in Lib 10 (coco) here for RSDOS.BAS (I think!... it's RSDOS.???) which is the rsdos basic program to do this. Then you can download under rsdos (until you get comfortable with/get an os9 term program) and run that program to create an os9 directory on the rsdos disk. You then boot to os9 and copy the files to a real os9 disk. I hope someone jumps in with the real filename for that util. Guys?? This is an rsdos utility which writes an os9 directory on a rsdos disk making it readable under os9. With this you can download files to a fresh rsdos disk, run the utility and then copy the files to an os9 disk under os9. I would suggest that the first thing you do once you have downloaded DOSOR9 is to use it to download one of the os9 based file inport/export utilities in the library (such as RSDOS.AR in library 9) then forget about DOSOR9 since it is a bit clumsy to use. Never before in the history of this forum have I received as many requests from forum members to "do something". If it appears as if we, the forum's SYSOPs, just sat back and waited for things to take their natural course... your perception is right. That really was the only way things would be able to work out so that everyone felt that they got a fair shake. I, or any of the SYSOPS, could have moved any or all of the messages out of public view. We could have delted the message. We could have asked everyone to hold out their hands while we got the rulers out (those of you who attended Catholic schools will know what I mean!). We didn't, and because we allowed the conversations to progress, both on the forum and (thankfully for the outcome) offline as well, everyone looks like they're friends again, or at least plan on being civil to each other in an attempt to serve the OS-9 community with factual and appropriate comments about their own hardware, leaving the OS-9 user to make up his own mind about who is, or is not, the "good guy". Now, in an effort to help prevent something like this from happening in the future, we're shuffling the sections around a little bit to provide a private section where OS-9 vendors (hardware and/or software) can talk amongst themselves. We've moved the messages and the library files from the Atari ST section into the general OS9/68000 (OSK) section, at least for the next while, and Section 13 has been assigned to OS-9 Vendors. Unlucky 13? Only if it's not used! And to all, a little reminder that we always want forum members to feel free to express themselves almost however they want. The exceptions are personal attacks on anyone which never serve any good purpose and tend to alienate so many folks (as was demonstrated again over the last few days!). Automatic locking is great: You don't have to worry about writing such protection into your programs. You can add explicit locking, but 99.9% of all code doesn't do or need that (fancy databases might want to on occasion). Perhaps you could write about cases that need this? BTW, my two favorite record / EOF locking stories are: 1. Coupla years ago, an Apple rep on BYTE's Computer Chronicles show talked about Apple moving to a multitasking OS, and how new and neat this all was. Gary Kildall, amused by the guy's naivity, commented: "Ooooo gee, something nobody has thought of... since 1980 at least!". Then the Apple rep really got out of his depth, and said that older Mac apps would have no problems running together. Gary pounced: "Oh yeah? What about record-locking?? How are you going to prevent data destruction when these single-task-written programs go after the same files??" The poor Apple guy could only stammer out that "maybe some programs would have to be rewritten".... Gary leaned back and replied "Yeah. No kidding." 2. Hearing an Amiga user talk about the benefits of multitasking. "Why, I can use my de-GIF program on a picture I just finished downloading, AND I can be downloading a second GIF at the same time! Neat, eh?" "Sure" yawns the OS9er, "but I run my de-GIF program on a picture WHILE it downloads, to see if it's going to be any good. No good? Abort transfer. EOF locking keeps the two programs in step." Matter of fact, a friend the other day was: downloading a GIF, de-GIFing to another file, converting THAT second file to another format, and displaying the result... all with different programs, all in automatic lock-step. The programs didn't know it, or have to be written special. But deep down and often hidden from popular press view, there are undercurrents of operating system and language enthusiasts flowing in their own direction. Sometimes these hot currents bubble to the top (like Forth); sometimes they create whole new oceans (Unix). But they all have this in common: their users are called 'fanatics'... and their waves can wash up suddenly and explosively at times to change the ocean's face.. and make bored travelers take notice." Etc... Hey, I'm serious! Just think how many off-the-wall readers who would enjoy such an article. You could hit on the topic of nearly every language and OS around... it'd be quite popular, I'd think. Not to mention the great arguments you could start ;-). Besides, fractals and OOPs articles get real boring after a while... one of the endearing things about DDJ was its well, unconventionalness at times. Need to get back to that. Let's see. You could also include cult stuff which became popular later. Like Unix and C and Forth and Modula etc. Cult systems growing, like OS9. Cult systems disappearing, like CP/M users. You could also do an article on "whatever happened to xxx?", and bring in zillions of letters from people who are still using xxx . Just some thoughts. Some ideas come to mind see the recent issue of MW PIPELINES where Pete Dibble writes about porting from UNIX to OSK. There are some themes there you could expand on, especially about memory usage and error checking. 2nd idea ould be about memory management. because os9 and all its pgms are PIC it makes memory management almost trivial. see osk where you do not even need an MMU (OSK is only the equivalent of OS9 level I last I heard) and for OS9/6809 users the MMU is fairly trivial yet much more powerful than the approach one gets with M/PM for example. If you want actual code you might look at IAPL of mine and what PIC and re-entrancy imply and how to write applications that use that. Along the same lines a discussion of how MW C compiler handles initializers in PIC code might be instructive. Finally if you want to get into device drivers see the source for DART (of mine) in non-coco os9 section here. As well as being nicely commneted it shows how to write a re-entrant driver when the hardware (2681 UART) is not re-entrant and has some shared write-only registers. Happy to collaborate on an article if my name goes in the by-line ;-) ! (Iwrote one for byte some time ago). good luck. Me and another guy used it to run a radar simulator until the funds ran out. We replaced it with a pdp-11 so the programmers could finish the project under cost (software costs more than hardware, they KNEW pdp-11 RTX). Anyway the simulator bit the dust and parts of it are on diplay at the local museam (god I can't spell that word tonight...) I inherited (sp?) the GMX. Since the GMX didn't have a screen editor I always used my PC to edit, then upload to the GMX. This got old real fast. The only thing I didn't like about this board was it's software memory management routine which limits a task to 512 kb. If you compile compress with debug on, poof - too big. Stuff like that. I liked it because it swapped. That way I could have more procs than memory. The ram disk was neat. Good software for it (C Compiler, Assembler). I always half-assed everything on it, because of the screen editor lack. I just got tired of it and couldn't break down and learn the big public domain editor (what's its name?? late I guess). I initially had it talking to killer in dallas with a uucp I built, but it wouldn't work locally. Mark Griffith really has done alot of work with it and I intend to see his source fixes/features. Oh by the way the USAF spent 20 million on a "real" simulator. Then they spent another 20 million getting it to work right. I still don't understand business! It was put together as a prototype workstation to sell to the universities around here. GMX were working on a 68030 board with MMU, 4Mb ram, 12 ports and a VM version of UniFlex. They also had a Hi-res colour graphics board in the works. And, at the time, there was a roumour they were working a deal with ATT to get Unix onto this thing they called a Twingle (?). The prototype was put together out a Micro-20, a 40Mb disk and one of those verticle PC type cabinets [D [D [D (oops, this is not edt, sorry about that) Anyway, it looked pretty sharp and had the people at the University of Toronto interested. But, they ahd to see it with Unix and the graphics board before they made any promisses. Well, the unix never came through, and they stopped making the 68030 board as fast as it had started. I ended up with the Micro-20. Bye the way, TSC has a full screen editor for UniFlex (called USE) for about $150. It works pretty good. These days I dont do much with the GMX except use as space heater. I once wrote some graphics routines for it (in anticipation of the GMX board) and used them to study the Mandebrot set in some detail using a HP plotter and a Atari ST520 as output devices. But lately my intrest in it seems to be increasing. For some unknown reason I feel like writing a token ring network driver to use through a serial port on it (?). Its a good machine and I hate to see it collect dust but there does'nt seem to much intrest in UniFlex out there. Anyhow, tahnks for the reply. I've got a boring old MS-DOS machine, a Macintosh and several machines running UNIX. If the code is byte order dependant, the Mac would probably be the easiest to port it to. If I can get around the byte order problem, an MS-DOS version would probably be of interest to more people besides myself. Just out of curiosity, did anyone ever port OS-9 to the Macintosh? How much does a port kit cost from Microware? The Ultrascience OS-9 for the Mac is not strictly a port. It is actually a Mac application that translates OS-9 to the Mac OS. The advantage of this approach is that it is very easy to install and use. On the other hand, you'd likely not be able to write any systems modules for it. "Introducing G-Windows, a complete Graphical User Interface for the OS-9 Real-Time Multitasking Operating System. G-Windows lets you build a visually attractive and powerful user interface using a set of simple and easy-to-use function calls to create windows, menus, and a variety of input/output gadgets. An application editor, G-View lets you draw screens with gadgets that link easily in to your applciation program written in C. What's more, G-Windows is totally multi-tasking (all windows can be active and updated at the same time). It is extremely memory efficient and can be ROMed for embedded systems applications. G-Windows will operate on any G-64/G-96 or VME bus 680x0 system running OS-9. Just plug in GESAPC's Graphics, mouse and keyboard interface card into your backplane, install the G-Windows software and your system is ready to shine with 256 colors and resolution of 640 X 480 and higher." You know that resistor under the keyboard connector which you jumpered? People have found that either putting it back to normal (or more often, using a smaller value like 10 ohms) or using a small pot allows them to tweek things for their particular GIME/meg/cpu. Maybe someone who's done this can pop in and give more details. Once things get tuned, their problems have gone away (and MV etc shouldn't need patching). Oh ...
