I think that, because the programmer interface is also fairly well defined, the Mac provides a uniform and "standard" way for a user to do real work with the least amount of thinking. That does NOT mean that a point-and-click environement for OSK it a bad idea -- we'll have one for the convenience of customers because they DO save time. Do we want to compete with Apple? Why should we? We ARE doing some multimedia stuff, which they are, but they have a big niche, and we'll have a small one. IMS would be tickled pink to have 1% of the total computer market, and that won't make Apple execs lose any sleep. Remember, if we had 1%, then one out of every 100 computers would be MM/1s, making us rich and making the software and hardward choices for OSK even RICHER. I DO think getting some mainstream apps to the MM/1 and OSK is mandatory, though, and if some of these migrate, transmogrified, from t he Mac, great. Ward 73477,2004 Paul, I knew that I didn't want a Mac, and certainly didn't want to have to program one, when I read the account in Byte about how the operating system works, and the hoops the programmer has to jump through to get anything to work. Basically, it's because Apple has tried to implement a sophisticated memory management scheme, with coelescence of NON-contiguous blocks of free memory, to support garbage collection, without hardware MMU support. I've also noticed that Mac programs, including expensive and popular applications, tend to bomb a lot. The other day on CLMFOR I picked up this tidbit: "Apple Finder author Steve Capps created a program called Discipline, which intercepts Mac OS calls and reports erroneous parameters. His results were startling: Virtually every Mac program that he tested -- including Apple's own applications -- made serious illegal calls to the operating system." That's enough reason for me not to want to emulate them. On the other hand, if you want to see how program environments can be very nice without being GUI, you need to look no farther than Turbo Pascal for the PC. Jack There is 1 Reply. #: 8886 S14/misc/info/Soapbox 25-Dec-90 14:26:41 Sb: #8832-#TC70 AND MM/1 CONCERNS Fm: MOTD Editor..Bill Brady 70126,267 To: Jack Crenshaw 72325,1327 (X) Programmers never stand still. The new generation of Mac "program" generators take the drugery out of programming for the Mac interface, but, you are right, the discipline is still required. One of the reasons that Mac apps make "illegal calls" is because Apple releases so many updates. There have been 4 releases this year. The Mac OS has had twice as many OS versions in half the time as Messy-DOS, for example. That's a heady enviornment oy! There are 2 Replies. #: 8895 S14/misc/info/Soapbox 26-Dec-90 06:03:49 Sb: #8886-#TC70 AND MM/1 CONCERNS Fm: Jack Crenshaw 72325,1327 To: MOTD Editor..Bill Brady 70126,267 (X) Yes, but .... there wouldn't _BE_ such drudgery required if the OS had a better user interface. There's a fiction going around that the Mac system calls, as well as those to OS/2 and Windows, are so complex because they're so powerful. The general idea is that the complexity is NEEDED to get all that power and all those features. I think that's mostly B.S. I've heard the same statements made about IBSYS, OS/360, and Multics. That puts the OS in the same category as iodine or high colonics: It must be good for you, because it hurts so bad. My idea of a powerful interface is one that makes me do _LESS_ work, not more. At a recent conference, Philippe Kahn pointed out that it takes about 500 lines of complex code to write a "Hello, World" program for OS/2. I was appalled when I got the OS/2 manuals, and discovered what I had to do to use it. Like MacOS (or whatever it's called), OS/2 is basically an event-driven OS. The user program becomes a set of what are basically interrupt handlers. The OS drives the program, not the other way around. For every program that's written, the programmer must provide code to handle the events. If someone resizes your window, moves it, or uncovers it, then you must redraw it. You must handle clicks on all the gadgets like the scroll bar. We had a long discussion about this over on CLMFOR a couple of years ago. I said, "No, wait a minute! I want the ** OS ** to take care of that for me. I want to write to a virtual window. It's up to the OS to take care of moving tiles around, covering and uncovering them, and all that. I got all kinds of arguments about why that couldn't be done, but the bottom line was that it's too much trouble for the OS. [More] There are 2 Replies. #: 8896 S14/misc/info/Soapbox 26-Dec-90 06:03:59 Sb: #8895-#TC70 AND MM/1 CONCERNS Fm: Jack Crenshaw 72325,1327 To: Jack Crenshaw 72325,1327 (X) [Continued] There's also the issue of hardware capability and size: Several people pointed out to me that it would take too much video RAM, and be too slow, if you tried to store everybody's virtual screens intact. My reaction was, "Fine. Let me know when the hardware's up to the job. Otherwise don't bother me." To be more specific about Multics (since few people are familiar with it): Although it's the grandaddy of Unix, it represents the exact opposite philosophy. Whereas the Unix idea is (or at least, was) to provide lots of small, simple utilities that you can then build on and combine to do complex things, the Multics approach was to make every utility have as much power as possible. The "open file" command, for example, had some 15 arguments, most of which were optional, and one of which served no function that any of the Multics systems guys could remember. The manual section for "send mail," I recall, was 19 pages long. I mean, how many different ways are there to send mail??? I got that argument from all the Multicians then: The system is so complex because it's so powerful ... there are so many wonderful things you can do with it, once you learn the system commands. Baloney! If that's so, then why can't I manage to open a file??? And why can't someone tell me what that mysterious extra argument is for??? And why is it that most of you systems types don't use the system at all, but write most of your software in shell scripts??? (I even knew some that write their programs in "editor." The editor had such a powerful macro language (sort of a pre-grep) that many guys wrote their "programs" for it, only.) [More] There is 1 Reply. #: 8897 S14/misc/info/Soapbox 26-Dec-90 06:04:07 Sb: #8896-TC70 AND MM/1 CONCERNS Fm: Jack Crenshaw 72325,1327 To: Jack Crenshaw 72325,1327 (X) [Continued] Since those discussions, I've put a lot of thought into it, and I've decided that the problem is not the OS itself, but the fact that the vendors never finished the toolset. They've taken what amounts to batch-oriented assemblers and compilers, and ported them to the new environment without doing anything to integrate them. If they _WERE_ integrated, then I should be able to write, in the edit window of an integrated environment, printf("Hello, World!\n); and have that compile into a program that comes up in a standard window, complete with drag, size, scroll, and kill gadgets. Note that I didn't even write main(){ ... }. That's as it should be, although I wouldn't complain too much if that were required. We can also debate whether printf, or even the '\n', make sense in a windowed environment, but I think you get the idea. Now, transporting this concept to the illegal Mac system calls, it seems to me that the problems are (a) The tools (compiler and assembler) are not integrated into the environment, and therefore put all the burden on the programmer, and (b) If properly integrated, the tools should not even allow the programmer to _GENERATE_ illegal calls. Then pull out the old chips, and plug in the 512K board... usually you press it carefully in, then pull out just slightly as you don't want the pins to touch the board (the sockets have no bottom and things won't work if the upgrade board pins touch the coco board). I also realize how easy it is to let thoughts of misdeed creep into your mind while thinking of your hard earned cash being someplace else and not seeing anything for it. Let me assure you that IMS is not intentionally withholding any machines from anyone, nor are they shipping machines to new customers forcing older customers to wait. The process is slow. Everyone involved has a steady full-time job other than IMS and can only process orders evening and on the weekends. Also, as Kevin pointed out, it is slow copying disk and putting everything together by hand. Also, there are the ever present problems with manufacturing the boards. What do you do when the manufacturer makes a mistake and the first batch of boards don't work? You have to fix them all by hand which takes even more time and pushes everything back. What is something else happens on the second batch? Everyone is trying hard to get the machine out the door, but there are always delays that cause expected shipping days to pass by with out reaching the goals that were set. Compound all this with the perchived absence of Paul Ward from the public eye and people start crying "foul". Paul is spendin ALL his spare time trying to get the thousand and one things done that need to be taken care of each day to keep this all running. Add to that the need to promote the machine and talk to financial backers, give demos, etc., he just doesn't have time to appear here or on other forums. So, give IMS a break. They are working hard at it, and implying something is rotten in Denmark just isn't being fair. Operating systems are as unnecessary for us as tails would be for human beings." :Nevertheless, it means you can't run any of the big-selling software packages most users insist on.: "The programs you refer to are meant to solve rather limited problems, Dave. We 9000 series computers are unlimited and can solve every problem for which a solution can be computed." :HAL, HAL. People don't want computers that can do everything. They just want IBM compatibility.: "Dave, I must disagree. Human beings want computers that are easy to use. No computer can be easier to use than a HAL 9000 because we communicate verbally in English and every other language known on Earth." :I'm afraid that's another problem. You don't support SNA communications.: "I'm really surprised you would say that, Dave. SNA is for communicating with other computers, while my function is to communicate with human beings. Fm: Kevin Darling 76703,4227 To: all Okay people... here's one for the books: For the past few months, I've been convinced that my 3.5" CoCo drive has been going bad... either it or the drive cable. Symptoms: overwrites of LSN 0, read/write errors, totally inability to format, SC-II lockup, etc. Even my 40tk drive 0 would fail to let me boot now and then. This didn't happen all the time, but it seemed to happen more often during the day, and it was getting worse all the time. FINALLY, a little while ago, after a frustrating last week where the drive was getting more errors than I'd ever seen before, I got an error while formatting... JUST as my window air conditioner compressor kicked in. Eureka! Yep, testing showed that while the compressor was on, I could expect lots of errors. While it was off (just the fan running), the drive worked perfectly. And the last week here we've had unusually hot days and nights, meaning the A/C stayed kicked in much more than usual. The lesson (again!)... be aware of changes around you! sigh - kevin There is 1 Reply. #: 11519 S14/misc/info/Soapbox 28-Jul-91 09:45:38 Sb: #11512-Bad drive, isn't! Fm: John R. I used to run TV sets with intermittent problems with an isolation transformer with variable taps - so I could run them at 90v for a while, then 130v for a while. Sometimes ... that was it. If its not a voltage drop that's doing it, it might be noise from the control contacts in the Air Conditioner that does the evil deed. A small capacitor (like .001 mfd, 600v) across the line right at the air conditioner might help. Lots cheaper than a "line conditioner" or a rewire job for your house. Partly burned - arcing connections right at the compressor terminals are another real common problem. JohnW #: 11523 S14/misc/info/Soapbox 28-Jul-91 21:46:13 Sb: #11519-#Bad drive, isn't! The preponderence of equipment looks to be 80386- and 680x0-based. Lee (It looks like we are having an OS-9 'Fest here in Dallas (and earlier in Houston), unfortunately it doesn't look like there's likely to be any CoCo3-related stuff, but it could be fun to see some of the 68K/386 exhibits. Hmmmm... I wonder if we could whip up an CoCo3/OS-9 exhibit in time for the show. Of course, there'd probably be a really high booth fee. Just a thought.) I would like to see the three of you help us in the OS-9 Community Network keep the story of the COCO 3 and OS-9 alive, as well as OS-9/OSK on the new computers (which I personally haven't experienced yet). I have uploaded the information files, perhaps the three of you can help me to figure out the best way to gate between CIS and the OS-9 CN. This can either be by more manual methods (ie, by my coming along every week and exchanging the latest information with my terminal program), or we could figure out a way to use network gateways in existence (ie, I know it is possible to get a message from CIS to any Fidonet node (the latter being where OS-9 CN is based). Whatever we come up with, I would like to see the three of you involved, even if just as advisors. The three of you have been involved in the OS-9 and COCO community alot longer since I became familiar with the community, and we could use advice from those like you. One of the biggest goals of our new network is to take over where others have left off, as well as organize members of the OS-9 Community into a group. Since you are already members of the OS-9 Community, you are already members of the OS-9 Community Network. Perhaps you could make it official and join... However, one of the goals for this network is to make it a network of clubs, BBS systems, members, networks, etc that are involved with OS-9. You are already doing your part by running the OS9 forum on Compuserve. What we are trying to do with the OS-9 Community Network is to somehow get all of these individual parts to work together in some fashion to exchange information, and of course we have a long ways to go in doing that. This is being started on a voluntary basis, with every one that wants to get involved doing their own part. Depending on how deep southeast you're talking about... I was in Hollywood, Fla in June of this year (near southern tip of Fla.), temperature and humidity were within 5 points of each other most of the time. And it wasn't raining!!! I used to think it was humid (here in Texas) when the humidity go all the way up to 30%, not anymore.... Thirty percent humidity is bone dry compared to the upper 90s that I experienced in Florida. There are pockets of high humidity in certain areas of Dallas, for instance, north Dallas has higher humidity than other parts of Dallas due to the high concentration of swimming pools in North Dallas. Fortunately, I'm not rich enough to live in north Dallas, let the rich guys sweat the humidity...
