Have any of you run into the same problem as I have, and perhaps found a solution? The problem is that when my file exceeds about 950 records, DM has problems with sorting. The sort seems to progress through its three phases (reading the key fields, sorting them, and writing the key file) but goes off into outer space when trying to return to the main program. My guess is that the key fields (or some memory used during sorting) is overwriting some essential stuff when it exceeds a certain size. The CoCo doesn't crash, but even the module header appears to get scribbled, since a PROCS no longer shows the module name or even the ID sometimes. Fortunately, the key file SEEMS to be written correctly, but recovery sometimes requires rebooting; a completely unacceptable bug. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I would happily change to something other than DM, but have found nothing else that will do the job (which requires, among other things, three-level sorts). #: 19699 S10/OS9/6809 (CoCo) 11-Feb-94 23:22:44 Sb: The Future Fm: Brother Jeremy, CSJW 76477,142 To: All Dear Friends: While visiting with RICKULAND of Conect fame, we were discussing what was now the minimum requirement for a COCO OS9 system. For example, at CSJW we have: 1. A 2meg COCO 3 with a 6309, 5-1/4 and 3-1/2 drives, 20 meg harddrive, SC 2 with 4-in-1. 2. A 512k COCO 3 with 6309, 2 5-1/4 drives in a Tandy 2000 Case with an st252n with Disto SC-2 and 4-in-1. 3. A 512k COCO 3 with 6809, 3 Tandy 5-1/4 80 track dsdd, Mulitpak, a Disto MEB with HardDisk Controller, two 10 meg Bernoulli Drives, and soon a Tallgrass Tape Backup Unit. 4. A Northern Telcom DisplayPhone being used as a terminal on the COCO/2000 box. 5. EARS, the Voice and various esoteric hardware. I think it is clear that the 6309 is now basic operating standard. 512k minimum with 2 megs desirable. We have both Powerboost and Nitros9. Obviously, RS232 packs, etc. are also required equipement. I would like to know what hardware you are running. This is for several reasons: 1. What is being used so that programmers could write for this hardware. 2. So that the hardware vendors would know what hardware is still needed. 3. What software you would like to see. Obviously there are many of us in the 6809/os9 world who still want to see the Level 2 upgrade released. This is a mandatory project for the Users Group to undertake. 4. The SBF module from Microware. It was written for 6809, but never released. We should negotiate with with MicroWare to get any unreleased 6809 specific modules. 5. Certain RSDOS progras to be ported to 6809/OS9. Of course it should be noted that 6809 and 6309 should be considered interchangable as far as need. While OSK is the future, OS9 (6809,6309) is still a present reality and should not be abandoned. To do so would leave little reason for the 6809ers to support the User Group. Please take a few moments to respond to the questions raised in this posting, and feel free to post it where-ever you wish. Serial devices include an X10 controller, a Star NX-1000 printer and my MM/1. I've purchased, but not yet installed, a Disto 2M upgrade, 6309 and a KenTon HD interface that will inherit my MM/1 SCSI drive when I replace it with a larger one. I use my CoCo not only for InfoXpress development, but also for a lot of my personal record keeping using a variety of software, and even though I have an MM/1, and at some point plan on purchasing a DOS machine, I intend to keep my CoCo for quite a while. I hope that the UG can manage to acquire the upgrade, as well as the other system parts, such as SBF. I've already told Carl that I would be happy to help. Does anyone know if NFM was ever developed for the CoCo? A serial NFM system for the CoCo would be awesome! I plan to continue support for CoCo InfoXpress, it has been very difficult to implement so much in such a small address space, but I've managed so far. Once I get my 2M and 6309 installed, I plan on optimizing InfoXpress to take advantage of additional memory, and some of the 6309 capabilities. -Bill- #: 19706 S10/OS9/6809 (CoCo) 13-Feb-94 10:05:44 Sb: #19699-The Future Fm: Tony van der Hoff 100113,2200 To: Brother Jeremy, CSJW 76477,142 (X) Dear Brother Jeremy, I have not really been aware of the activities of the OS-9 user group, having left the OS-9 scene years ago. Software wish list: I have Dynacalc, great spreadsheet, but would like to see one utilizing level-2 capabilities, possibly with greater memory capability??? Seems that we have all we need for WP with VED/VPRINT, course any enhancements would be icing on the cake. We have some rather good telecom software, I use both IX and OSTERM, but one thing I would like to see is the ability to handle PC-oriented BBS's a little better. It's fun to get all the colorful screens provided by ANSI codes, but OSTerm converts these to OS9 escape codes, and of course if one attempts to list the capture buffer to a printer, these are random escape sequences to the printer and this drives it completely bonkers. I'd like to see one standard upgraded version of OS9 that everyone is using. I keep an updatelog in my config directory describing the patches I have in my modules directory, and that sucker is getting quite long. Assuming that I am not the one and only user of Data Master on this forum, perhaps someone else has found a solution to the trouble I am having. I use Datamaster for a fairly large file having somewhat over 1000 records. During the sorting process it reads in one, two or three key fields, each 10 characters long, then sorts them (using what appears to be the most inefficient sorting process ever devised) then writes out the key file to disk. Problem is that with so many records it runs out of memory at around 800 records (on a two key sort). Does it stop gracefully and let me know? Nope; it happily overwrites the bottom of the program area, causing a spectacular crash as soon as the sort is finished. Mercifully, the sort routine itself appears to be somewhere higher in memory and doesn't get wiped out, so that after killing the process the files are still intact. Now here's the confusing part. Data Master has a perfectly good mechanism built in to handle this. It is quite capable of reading in, say, 150 records at a time, writing out temporary files, then merging them to form the final key file. I know, because I have seen it do this. Indeed, it happily did exactly this last night through several sorts; all automatically. But I have only seen it do this on two occasions, and tonight it is back to the crashing behavior. The obvious question is, does anyone know what triggers Data Master to switch to using temporary files (which it should do automatically when short on memory, of course)? I mention this because I do a fair amount of transferring to and from MSDOS diskettes using PCDOS, and this requires Sdisk3. However, Sdisk3 does not support the no-halt operation of my Disto Super Controller II. The result is that I have to do a lot of rebooting, saving to floppy (no hard drive), etc. If I could have both drivers in memory it would make things much easier; all I would need is another descriptor, say d3 (or B:, heh heh), to access IBM diskettes. I suppose I'm being lazy and could simply try it, but I don't want to go to the trouble of making a new boot file if someone already knows that it won't work. Tandy floppy controller in slot 4. Disto RS232 Pack in slot 1. Seagate ST138N SCSI hard drive. The hard disk controller's origin and make is uncertain. It is a plain white SCSI controller with no other ports or identification. The seller to me had no documentation and simply identified it as a "DSI" controller and I thought he meant a Disto Hard drive interface (not 4 in 1). The controller is "full size", and as I said, plain white. Software: I am using Matt Thompson's freeware SCSISYS drivers with OS-9, Level 2 with the intention of reqistering it as soon as I can get it going. The documentation is good enough if you have a working knowledge of OS-9 and know how to manipulate drivers, descriptors, and modules. Progress to date: Nothing. The initial step of creating drivers was accomplished (the software has a clear and well written interface). But when attempting to either verify or format the hard drive, no activity occurs, the drive light never even flickers, no error messages appear and the system requires a reboot. Questions: 1. Can anybody give me a clue, based on the above description, what the hard drive controller really is? 2. Is the parity jumper on the hard drive left on or removed? 3. Will Thompson's freeware version of the software work with a multipak? Seems to me I read somewhere that it doesn't. And finally: If I can't get anywhere with this setup, would someone please give me a source for a Coco SCSI interface with software and docs. I see this stuff for sale now and then and perhaps this will inspire someone to part with one (a Disto 4 in 1 maybe?) that is no longer in use or is a spare. Mike Fahy Central City, Pa. An alternate source for a driver might be my "scsi47.ar" package in the database. You might find this useful for testing that you can get the system working, but I have been recommending to folks to move to Matt's driver, because he needs the money... (And he's a friend, too.) I would suppose that it would be illegal to supply you with the Lv-2 stuff as it is copyrighted. The offsets in SCFDEFS & RBFDEFS should still work. Hard Drive: Seagate ST138N - 30 MB RLL - Verified good on a PC. Controller: Disto HDII piggybacked on a Disto Super Controller II. Drivers: SCSI package from Matt Thompson, freeware & registered versions. I started Friday afternoon using the registered version of the software which adds caching, turbo, and a few other things to the freeware version. Throughout the documentation, it is quite emphatically stated that to use 512 byte sectors, the actual sectors per track should be multiplied by two when creating a device descriptor. This was done. Parameters used were 613 Heads, 4 cylinders, and 52 (26x2) SPT. The low level and verify pass, which ignore the driver & descriptor, correctly indicated a hex number which came out to about 64,000 sectors which would be 32 MB (64000*512). Next an appropriate boot diskette was Os9gen'd containing H0 and SCSISYS drivers. When the High level format was started, it looked at the descriptor and indicated a hex number of twice the number of sectors which would tell the formatter to format a 64 MB drive. I let it run, assuming the documentation was correct and, not surprisingly, the drive commenced a lot of head banging halfway through the format process. I proceeded to twidle parameters, including backing down to 26 sectors per track. This resulted in a sucessful completion of the formatting but the drive was unreadable. All this takes a huge amount of time, since a new boot disk must be gen'd every time paramteres are changed. Finally I went to bed. Saturday morning I woke up with the bright idea that if I double the sectors per track I should reduce the cylinder count in half. I did this and the high level formatting went without a hitch, but I couldn't write anything legible to the drive. After a third cup of coffee and a stroll around the house, I resurrected my copy of the freeware version which doesn't have all the caching and other speedups in it. First I tried the descriptor creation according to the docs. Double the SPT and leave the actual cylinder count. Same thing as the night before . . head banging when it got to the end as if it was only half finished. Reduce the cylinder count in half, and all went beautifully. Formatted 64,000, 512 byte, sectors giving me 32 megs. I created the necessary directories on the hard drive (Shell and Grfdrv in Cmds of course, plus a DD descriptor in OS9boot on the floppy pointing to H0) and the machine now starts the boot from the floppy, finishes from the hard, including the commands in Startup on the hard. Copied the rest of the operating system on the Hard Drive and I am now running a three user system with both terminals (a PC and an old Model III) defaulting to H0. Picking up the pieces: Couldn't use the registered version of Thompson's SCSI with a Disto HDII. Contrary to the docs, I had to reduce the cylinder count if I increased the SPT. The combination of SCSI & 512 byte sectors plus the capabilities of the 6809 gives me performance far superior to my older PC's and their MFM drives. That isn't bias, it's simple truth. Be interesting to see how it works with Caching & Turbo in the reg. version. Hope something happens before I get the disk filled up . The Disto arrangement is nice. Run a communications program (terminal program) on each computer and then "download" from one computer to the other. You'll need a "null Modem adaptor" on one end of the cable (or else a special cable). The purpose of this cable is to swap TD and RD from one end to the other. You can probably get away with using just serial pins 2,3 & 7. I suspect you will probably need to jumper CD (and maybe DSR and/or CTS too) high on each end of the cable (to fool each computer) to get things to work. Take a look at the DOCs for the serial ports for each computer and note the directions of the various signals and this should make more sense. Ask here if you need more help with this. -J #: 20215 S10/OS9/6809 (CoCo) 16-Aug-94 22:33:18 Sb: #19627-Data Master Fm: Lee Veal 74726,1752 To: Ian Hodgson 72177,1762 (X) Isn't DM the Level 2 upgrade of OS9-Profile that Computerware marketed? Fm: Rogelio Perea 72056,1204 To: ALL One more OS9 question from a novice :-) I have been studying OS9LII A Guide To Windows, and two things woke up my curiosity. First, I know about how to modify the data size for certain utilities like BACKUP and COPY by providing a modifier stating the amount of bytes desired as Data Size; running an IDENT on both these the report includes Proc Size and Data Size among others.... could these utilities be modified directly to change their default data size?, I mean, most of the time I know they "waste" a lot of RAM space and most of the time I use them I specify the largest amount of RAM space allowed (about 56K). The other regards the /dd (default device) descriptor. The book says that right out of the box it should be a copy of /d0, and I have tried it and shure, when you do a "dir /dd", there comes up the directory of /d0. The text goes on about setting up /dd to point to a hard disk or a ram disk, my question is: how?. I have a RAM Disk descriptor and got Dmode from the libraries to change it to the needed size, and I was wondering if I could coax my CoCo III to set up a RAM Disk, copy the most used commands to it, maybe the Error "interpreter" currently on /d0/SYS, to have faster access to them and less wear and tear on the drives? I have read that Tandy hoped that software developers used the /dd descriptor as to have a system easier to set up.... what's the word on this and what was to be gained on a user level? huh... if any of you has any insight on this it would be greatly appreciated. I have a RAM Disk descriptor and got Dmode from the The easiest way is to start with a copy of the type of descriptor you wish to make /dd, then use dEd to twiddle the name of the descriptor. Verify, save and rename the module and you're all set. For instance, to change /h0 to /dd, fire up dEd, call in the /h0 descriptor and look at the last line. You'll see the name of the descriptor. Using the editing commands in dEd, change 'h0' to 'dd' > I have read that Tandy hoped that software developers used the /dd > descriptor as to have a system easier to set up.... what's the word on > this and what was to be gained on a user level? Consistency was what was to be gained. IF folks were to use /dd as their default drive, then applications could run regardless of device type and no need to tweak and twiddle descriptor names that happened to be hard coded in the program. It's a generally accepted practice, but you'll run across those that choose not to go this route. *- Steve -* There is 1 Reply. #: 20315 S10/OS9/6809 (CoCo) 06-Sep-94 23:18:18 Sb: #20310-Common OS9 ??? Since my original message to you I have stopped using 2.2a because of a number of fatal crashes (I gave up after 6 in a 15 minute period). Not sure why this should be, but it appears that the stack (or something) is eating the pointer values in RAM. I wonder if you have used any 6309-only commands in 2.2a by mistake? By the way, I would have had the command history cycle through the commands by clearing and rewriting the command line rather than generating new ones each time. This way (which is the way it works on my MSDOS machine at work) the text above the cursor position, and which you may want to be able to see, doesn't scroll off the screen when you are looking for a particular command line. I was hoping to use the game with the enhanced /d0 driver (6ms) I have on my system. The thing actually filled up most of the new disk, however, there was some space available to include the os9boot file in there, so I started to config a new boot disk that used VDG_Term instead of the window term.... and here's were my troubles really started: Setting aside the point that I was originally trying to enhance the game, I want to focus here on the events that took place after I tried to use CONFIG. Yes, [config] would create a new boot disk just as I wanted, problem is that every time I tried booting up with the new disk (with VDG_Term) the screen would show "OS9 BOOT" and after a whine or two from the drive "FAILED" was displayed. This happened everytime I tried to config a new boot disk. How can I set up my system so that I can use windows (I love them!!) and still have access to a VDG window from which I could run CoCo 2 OS9 programs?. I know some of these are hard coded to run from /term, which I patched to boot as an 80 col screen, and recall seeing somewhere about patches to allow some programs to run "out of" /term. The display command is used to beep on a unwanted entry and to erase this entry from the cursor position; and it's here where the trouble begins. If I enter any key other than "y" or "n" the procedure erases the character echoed to the screen and repositions the cursor... it works except for one: the ENTER key. Here what happens is that the cursor is displaced to the next line "up" in the screen, and if the user presses ENTER repeteadly the cursor will eventually get to the HOME position..... this messes up the display and really looks ugly. Is there way to disable the ENTER key when the program is running?, Should I use the INKEY routine instead of GET #0 ? Could I prevent the key beign echoed to the screen except for the authorized replies, like "y" or "n" ? Puckett's Official Basic09 Tour Guide is one of the best books available for the Color Computer. After reading it and trying out the examples I came across several "bugs" which I will outline here, maybe I am doing something wrong on my end so I would like your comments: On page 89 there's a procedure called "echoforawhile": PROCEDURE echoforawhile DIM char:BYTE LOOP GET #0,char EXITIF ASC(char)=$1B (* ESCAPE *) PRINT "Don't frown, you told me to ESCAPE." ENDEXIT PUT #1,char ENDLOOP END here, char is declared as BYTE, but ASC evaluates STRINGs, so the CoCo reports an error; I had to use EXITIF ASC(STR$(char))=$1B to use the procedure. Also, it seems that $1B is not evaluated at all. Turning to page 90, let us examine the procedure "exitgracefully": PROCEDURE exitgracefully DIM num, val, minimum:INTEGER num:=100 \ minimum:=-10 REPEAT num:=num-1 EXITIF num<0 THEN PRINT "Error - You can't take the square"; PRINT "root of a negative number!" ENDEXIT val:=val+SQRT(num) UNTIL num < minimum END the problem I found here is that "val" is a reserved word, so to get this procedure working I had to change the variables's name to "value". Going over to page 95, my CoCo III busts out with: PROCEDURE positiontest DIM yes:BOOLEAN yes:=TRUE WHILE yes DO PRINT "OK"; yes:=POS x 50 ENDWHILE END the sixth line has an error, it should read --> yes:=POS<50 Pages 100 and 101 have a procedure called "dayofweek" showing how to use the ON ... GOSUB control structure: PROECDURE dayofweek DIM day:INTEGER day:=1+INT(RND(6)) ON day GOSUB 10,20,30,40,50,60,70 10 PRINT "Sunday" / RETURN 20 PRINT "Monday" / RETURN 30 PRINT "Tuesday" / RETURN 40 PRINT "Wednesday" / RETURN 50 PRINT "Thursday" / RETURN 60 PRINT "Friday" / RETURN 70 PRINT "Saturday" / RETURN well, all those slashes are backwards!!. To get it right I had to replace them it the "inverse backslash" --> \ I'm almost through with this, so moving to page 119: PROCEDURE makefile TYPE inventory_item=name:STRING[25];list,cost:REAL;qty:INTEGER DIM inventory_array(100):inventory_item DIM work_record:inventory_item DIM path, counter:BYTE CREATE #path,"inventory" work_record.name:="" work_record.list:=0. work_record.cost:=0. work_record.qty:=0 FOR counter:=1 to 100 PUT #path,work_record NEXT counter END my CoCo gives an error when DIMensioning counter as BYTE, but changing that to DIM counter:INTEGER fixed things up. And to finish this up there's only one more typo on page 136 with the AUTOMULT procedure. It seems that when printing this page of the book a carriage return was overlooked and the procedure PRINTANSWER began where AUTOMULT ended. Both work OK but as typed the procedures can cause some confusion to the untrained eye. There they are. Am I correct in assuming these could be described as bugs or did I slip somewhere in the programs?. In echoforawhile, you can leave 'char' as a BYTE, if you change the test line to: EXITIF char=$1B THEN (* ESCAPE *) To really get it to work, you'll have to zap out the EOF value in the path descriptor. In makefile, all loop counters in for/next have to REAL or INTEGER. Looks like someone decided to 'clean up' the code before it was printed. This is a good idea here, and in fact, I do have a separate GAMES directory, and in it I put in a cmds directory - I called it GAMCMDS - it wouldn't have hurt to call it CMDS, but I just hate to see so many directories with the same name strewn all through the HD . One suggestion, you CAN have the programs in an alternate directory, and then for frequently-called applications, you can have a procedure file to do the setup and call the main program.. you can then either have this procedure file in your normal data directory (root dir of HD, if you wish). For example, here's one file I set up to call flight simulator, I call it fsim; in this case, I put it and all similar files in the directory GAMES, I'll add comments for clarification: chx /dd/games/gamcmds; * this is local to this procedure * Here, I load all programs for speed * I could have copied all to /r0 then "chx /r0" Load fs Load f2 f3 f4 * If all modules are loaded, then this next cmd takes care * of the case where the program calls anything in the normal * CMDS directory. chx /dd/cmds * Here, I set up a directory for all data modules, etc that * Flight Simulator uses. chd /dd/games/flightsim2 fs <>>>/1; * When calling from a procedure file, redirect STDIO unlink fs f2 f3 f4; * Clean up after you're done This is just a suggestion for how to implement a procedure file. I may be getting too elementary for you, but I thought you might be a little unclear on how a procedure file could be used for this. One other thing about the above example, before I get corrected on this. Flight Simulator and many other games must be executed in a VDG screen, and the way this file is set up, you have to be in a VDG (32-col) screen to execute this type program.. It could be done where it would automatically go into a window, but I never got that involved. -- David Breeding -- CompuServe : 72330,2051 Delphi : DBREEDING *** Sent via CoCo-InfoXpress V1.01 *** ^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^ There is 1 Reply. #: 20565 S10/OS9/6809 (CoCo) 19-Nov-94 07:58:57 Sb: #20551-#CoCo Comment&? You can have some really good setups like this. You can call many of your applications like this, and have them in separate directories, and if you call them from a procedure file, you can chx or chd, and this will stay in effect as long as the program is in use. One little gotcha here.. some programs call standard cmds, like "dir" or "del", for example.. If a cmd like this is called, if it is not in memory, you will need to have a copy of this command in whatever directory you have "chx"ed to. -- David Breeding -- CompuServe : 72330,2051 Delphi : DBREEDING *** Sent via CoCo-InfoXpress V1.01 *** ^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^ There is 1 Reply. #: 20571 S10/OS9/6809 (CoCo) 20-Nov-94 10:05:40 Sb: #20567-#CoCo Comment&? However, something else that might be of use.. If you're strictly interested in MV, then you can STILL have the executables in the one CMDS directory, but have aif's and data files in a separate directory. You simply set up your aif to where it will call the executable program.. or, you can have the executable in any other directory, and then in the aif, just have the absolute patname for the command line. Change that byte (using DED, Modpatch, or something similiar) to a $26 to turn wildcarding on as the default, $27 to turn it off. For memory on forking programs, there are 2 locations you might be concerned with. The main fork routine is at $1379, and is currently defaulted to $1f 256 byte pages (7.75K) for a data area (unless the program wants 16 or less pages). The fork routine for parsing STARTUP files is also set to $1f, but it's patch address would be $984. -Curtis- #: 20598 S10/OS9/6809 (CoCo) 29-Nov-94 21:58:38 Sb: #Hard Drive Fm: Brother Jeremy, CSJW 76477,142 To: All Dear Friends: I am trying to help out a friend who needs to obtain a 20-30 meg MFM 5-1/4" half-height hard drive. Also have one 8 Bit WD RLL Contoller Card and one Seagate 8 Bit MFM controller. If any ribbon cables are needed, I have them. All I need is shipping plus a couple bucks to get me to the UPS drop.
