Notes for Mary BOYLE

Mary and her husband, Elijah Owens, briefly ran a store in Cartwright, until it burned down May 20, 1909.

Both Mary and her husband’s graves were amongst the ones that were accidentally unearthed when highway 5 (I believe) was being moved in 1962 From talking to some of the locals in Cartwright who were around at the time, it appears that somebody (or some company) was contracted to move the graves, but about 35-40 were missed, and were discovered when the highway construction crew hit them. At this point, the tombstones were missing, so they just moved the graves to the new cemetery, and put up a memorial tombstone stating how many adults and how many children were moved, but not identifying any of them. According to old cemetery records, Elijah and Mary were buried in Plot #67 in the old graveyard, along with Russell Thompson Owens (Arminella and her husband Thompson Owens first born, who died June 20, 1909 at the age of 6 months and 14 days), and Thelma Marguerite Owens, who died July 20, 1915 at the age of 1 year and 23 days (4th child of Arminella and Thompson).

The 1861 census shows her living in Huntley Township, along with her father, step-mother, and siblings, with her at age 17.

1881 census has her birth year as 1853.

Death date verified by Manitoba Vital Statistics death record (lists death place as RM of Roblin).

Marriage date and place also from Manitoba Vital Statistics record.

There is a brief mention of “Mrs. E. Owens, of the Chesterville district, sustained sever although not necessarily serious injuries as the result of a fall last week”, in the Dec 19 1908 issue of the Southern Manitoba Review newspaper.

Her obituary in the February 23, 1922 edition of the Southern Manitoba Review newspaper says that she passed away at the home of her son-in-law (Thompson Owens) in the morning. She had taken ill about a week prior, catching a severe cold which a day or two later developed into pneumonia. It also mentions that she had 4 brothers and 4 sisters surviving, which doesn’t quite jive. She had 5 brothers/half brothers still alive (James, William Jr., Charles, Henry and Parker), and either 3 or 4 sisters (Hester, Margaret, Josephine, and possibly Elizabeth).
