When Thomas started farming he naturally built up debts. The first years were rough with crop failures due to frost. When threshing time came the sherriff would watch the threshing so he could seize the grain. The hard part was having to feed him & he wouldn’t leave until threshing was done. One fall there was no crop and Thomas couldn’t make payments on the threshing machine so the company came & took his best team of horses. Times eventually improved and his farm became a paying proposition.

According to Manitou history book, Thomas originally settled on SW1/4 14-3-7, and shortly thereafter took up homestead on SE 30-3-7. He later added the SW 1/4 as well by pre-emption. Also, after he settled on the homestead, he returned to Kinburn, Ontario to marry his childhood sweetheart Sarah Jane Owens.
