Notes for Hester Zenie “Zenie or Lena” STOREY

Listed as Ester Storey in 1881 Manitoba census, with a birth year of 1868.

She is the only child of William and Hester (both her and her mom’s names are spelled “Esther”) in the 1891 census for Dufferin, Manitoba (Which was taken on April 30th, 1891).

In their wedding announcement in the April 14, 1898 edition of the Manitou Mercury newspaper, they give her name as “Miss Lena Story”.

The obituary for her mother in the August 21, 1902 Manitou Mercury newspaper mentions that she arrived from Minneapolis in time to see her mother before her death, so she was living there by then.

Manitoba Vital Statistics record verifies date and place of marriage.

There is a postcard to Mary Jane Storey from Zenie (she spells her own name ‘Story’) that is dated Sep. 15, 1927, and is postmarked in Winnipeg.

There are two other postcards from “Z.J.” from Minneapolis, MN - one from April 4, 1909, and one from December 1914. So, she must have lived there for a time.

The Minneapolis City Directory of 1909 (online at http://box2.nmtvault.com/Hennepin2/jsp/RcWebBrowse.jsp?layout=grid&collection_filter=All&start=40&items=40) shows Zenie H Johnson (widow Walker) working as a cashier, room 800 4th Ave South. 1910 has her the same except room 802. From 1911 onward, she no longer has her own listing, so I presume she moved in with somebody else, since she was still in Minneapolis until at least the end of 1914.

The 1915 directory no longer has a Zenie H Johnson listed (or under her maiden name, etc.)

The Storey family tree I have says that she ended up being a Chiropodist (foot specialist) in Winnipeg.

She has a gravestone in Manitou Cemetery, Manitou, Manitoba. It spells her name there “Hester Zenia Johnson” (according to the Manitou history book, anyways).
