Notes for Charles Clarence “Clarence” BOYLE

Always lived with his parents. The first summer he was in Lintlaw, he went to a school picnic on July 1st. During the excitement of a make-shift football game, he broke his leg. He spent the rest of the summer and early autumn in Wadena (there is a postcard to him in Wadena that was sent to help him catch up on family news, sent during this time). The hospital at that time was in the doctor’s home. He had been doing the farm work here while the others were back in Manitoba.

During the 1918 flu he took care of all the others, did all chores, hauled feed for a number of horses, cooked and cleaned. About two weeks after the others were over the flu, Clarence took sick. He died of pneumonia in the winter of 1918 at the age of 27.

It should be noted that his probate estate file states that he died on November 22nd (repeatedly, and signed/corrected by James himself), so I am going with this instead of the 24th.

His tombstone in Lintlaw says that he was born Nov. 23, 1889. This tombstone was added later, though (his original tombstone, in front of the large one, simply says “CCB” (his initials)).
