Thomas and Edna (as with all of James Boyle’s kids who married) eloped in Kelvington, Saskatchewan with Reverend A.W. Cann. They originally lived at the Haskell place, where Harvey and Hazel were born. They lived at the Hingley place when Ray was born. They had their own farm by the time Lorne, Dorothy and Maxine were born.
Thomas and Edna started their married life on a farm southeast of Lintlaw and lived there until the spring of 1929, with 2 of their children being born there. From there the family moved to a quarter north of Okla, SK, where Ray was born in June, 1931. Shortly after Ray’s birth, they moved to live with Thomas’ brother William.
In 1934, Thomas bought NW 12-36-9-W2 from the Debenture Company of Canada, on a crop share, or cash every year until it was paid off at $500.00. There was a total of 13 acres open that he farmed.
In 1936, Thomas recalled starting to thresh when of course rain came. The cupboards were bare and the need of money urgent, so he loaded some barley and sold it for 88 cents a bushel. Three weeks later they resumed threshing. Now the barley was sold for only 14 cents a bushel. With cream selling at 75 cents a can, things were grim.
The Boyle children all attended Sask Valley school, where Thomas served on the school board for several terms. In the 1950’s Thomas and sons had a threshing outfit and threshed every fall for different families in the community.
In 1957, Harvey and Ray went to Saskatoon for work, and in 1960, Edna, Thomas, Lorne and Maxine moved to Saskatoon where they lived in the Belle Block.
Harvey bought a house and the family lived with him. Edna was in poor health at this time and passed away on their 43rd wedding anniversary on June 17, 1968. For years afterwards, Thomas returned to stay by himself in a small one room, wood stove house on the farm during the summer months. The last years of his life he suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. He died of a heart attack. Pallbearers at this funeral were Leonard Johnson, Leo Engele, George Weinhandl, Ernest Anderson, Robert Sauer and Alex George.
