Notes for Anders Pedre “Andrew” SATRE

Middle name is from his birth/baptism entry from Parish records from Eidanger, Norway, and I am not sure if I have the spelling right.

A 1900 U.S. census for New Hope town, Portgage, Wisconsin shows a Christian Setre, married to Martha M., with 4 children (1 daughter, and 3 sons with an Anders P. being the eldest, born in April of 1881), and it shows them all being from Norway.

I have found a marriage record from Nelsonville, Portage, Wisconsin, from June 4, 1906, that has the marriage of Anders Peter Satre to Alma Odine Anderson, but it shows him as being born in New Hope, Portage, Wisconsin. Having the names this close, I believe that this is correct, and that he was of Norwegian descent.

A letter to him from the Department of the Interior (Saskatchewan) on November 3, 1911 (for his land patent for SE 1/4, Sec 34, Twp 34, Rg 11, W2) has his name as “Andrew Setre”. The sworn statement from his brother in law Adolph Anderson concerning the land states that Andrew built his house from July 1907 until May 5, 1908, and started permanently living in it as of May 5 (this was corroborated by another sworn statement from an Andrew Carlson). His own sworn statement also shows that he became a naturalized citizen of Canada on July 2, 1907. This land had been abandoned by its previous owner (an Anton Gieren from Langdon, North Dakota) for having “too many sloughs and water - no good for farming”. Anton never made buildings on it, and submitted his Declaration of Abandonment on January 5, 1906, and it officially went through on August 3, 1906.

Info on this family from Saskatchewan 1916 census. (He appears as “Peter Jr.”) They were in the 21 Mackenzie District, Sub-district 33 (near Margo if I have it right). Andrew and his wife are shown as having immigrated in 1908 (shortly before Arnold was born), and becomeing citizens in 1912. He was a farmer, and the family is listed as Lutheran.

In the 1921 census, his family is Sasman municipality in Saskatchewan.
