Notes for Margaret Victoria “Mary” CULLEN

Divorced around 1968.

Her obituary from Aug. 10, 2013 Winnipeg Free Press:

“MARGARET OWENS

MARGARET VICTORIA OWENS On August 2, 2013, Margaret Victoria Owens age 91 years, died peacefully at St. Boniface General Hospital. Margaret was the daughter of Thomas and Mary Anne (nee Mooney) Cullen. She was the youngest of her siblings, all who have predeceased her - Mary, Bernie, Bob, Jim and Tom. After high school, Margaret attended Success Business College and became an extraordinary stenographer. She continued in that career until she retired from CP Rail at the age of 66. She was a busy working mother, a diligent homemaker and a wonderful hostess. Her home was often the gathering place for family and friends, all of whom were treated to great meals and loving hospitality. In 1943, Margaret married Edgar Owens. Margaret and Edgar’s families had been friends in Cartwright, MB for many years so they had known one another since childhood. In 1950, Margaret and Edgar bought their home on Jubilee Avenue where they raised two daughters and became part of the Lord Roberts community. After 25 years together, the marriage ended and Margaret made a new life for herself adapting well to being single again. However, that was not to be forever. In 1996, Margaret and her old family friend, John Popovitch, became a couple and moved into Fort Garry Place. The years Margaret and John shared were filled with mutual affection, companionship and fun. Their being together gave Margaret a new lease on life. In December 2000 John passed away, and again, Margaret adjusted to single life. Margaret was a passionate sports fan. She loved to watch curling and golf. She cheered on (and sometimes shook a fist at) her beloved Blue Bombers and Toronto Blue Jays, rarely missing a game on TV. Margaret spent countless hours playing bingo over the past 60 years. The South Osborne Legion Branch was her hangout for a lot of those years. She played bingo and cribbage there, enjoyed the fellowship of the seniors’ club, and loved those casino trips, never exactly revealing how much the VLTs took from her. Margaret had great friends at the legion. In recent years, when she was less physically able, she was extremely grateful to many of those friends who helped make it possible for her to keep up those activities. Their caring support enabled her to attend legion functions much longer than she might have otherwise. Margaret was able to live to a great old age while staying in her own home. That is due, in great part, to the Home Care Program and its people. She was blessed by the compassion and kindness of her caregivers. They always cheerfully went the extra mile to make Margaret comfortable and to ease her daily burdens. Thank you to Regina, Zenia, Mary Jane, Heather, and Co-ordinator, Cheryl, for making such a positive difference in her life. Left to mourn her passing are Margaret’s two daughters and sons-in-law, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: daughter, Heather Talocka and her husband Don Talocka; Jodi Talocka, Brad Luciow and Quinton; Dan and Lorna Talocka and Ryan; Marnie and Todd Olson and Kaden; daughter, Margaret Constable and her husband, David Constable; Lowell Constable and Sara Robinson; Shannon Constable and Ray O’Brien, Larissa and Megan. Margaret will also be missed by her many friends, neighbours, nieces and nephews. A service of celebration will be held Monday, August 19, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Margaret’s memory to the Royal Canadian Legion, Winnipeg South Osborne #252, 427 Osborne Street, Winnipeg, MB R3L 2A3, or to a charity of your choice.”
