Obituary - London Free Press - June 4, 2009

MANN, Alan Frank - a resident of Wallaceburg, passed away peacefully at the Sydenham Campus in Wallaceburg on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 in his 73rd year. Al was a lifelong educator in Kent County and Wallaceburg’s historian. Son of the late Frank & Zine (McLean) Mann. Beloved husband of Ariel (Dalgety). Loving father of Blake Alan Mann and Susan (Mike) Willimott. Dear grandfather of Karla & Alison Willimott. Brother of Mary (Bill) Abraham, Bob (Marilyn) Mann, Don (Jeannette) Mann, David (Martha) Mann and Janet Mann & Herman DeSousa. Brother-in-law of Lowell (Marg) Dalgety and Carol Bell. Predeceased by Juanita Dalgety and Jack Bell. Alan is the author of 11 books on local or marine history and wrote for several marine and historical publications (Reminisce magazine, Old Autos, Big Band). His most satisfying book accomplishment was ‘No Return Ticket”, a five-year project compiling profiles of local war casualties. He was also an avid golfer, hockey player, boat buff (Boatnerd), Toronto Maple Leafs fan and history buff. Friends may call at the HAYCOCK-CAVANAGH FUNERAL HOME, 409 Nelson Street (at Elgin) in Wallaceburg from 6 - 9 PM on Friday. A celebration of Alan’s life will be conducted by Cheryl Kirk at Trinity United Church on Saturday, June 6 at 11 AM. Guests will be received at the church from 9:30 until service time. Al’s cremated remains will be interred in Riverview Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Al would prefer memorial donations to the Wallaceburg & District Historical Society so that his passion for Wallaceburg will be enduring.
