Owned and published a newspaper in Auburn, Illinois (actually a small community newspaper chain with 6 papers, including Auburn, that he purchased from Ted Dunn on June 1,1959 for $22,000). He grew up in Detroit before moving back to Sangmon County (where Springfield is) in 1959. (Auburn is just south of Springfield.)

He got married while serving in the U.S. Navy.
