Notes for Dr. John Brownlee TREILHARD

Obituary from Humphrey Funeral Home, Toronto, Ontario:

Dr. John TreilhardJuly 26, 1951 - December 2, 2016 With sadness and deep regret we announce the sudden passing of John Treilhard on Friday, at his home in Toronto. Survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Dr. Lynne Thurling, his daughter Marieke (Tyler) and granddaughter Maeve. Also survived by his stepchildren Kevin (Gloria), Sydney and Shane (Diana) and their children, who knew him affectionately as ‘Grampa John.’ A man of letters, music and medicine, John will be remembered for his unflinching dedication to his profession as well as his passion for literature, history and the arts. Born in Flin Flon, Manitoba, John attended Saint John’s School of Manitoba in his youth and graduated with a B.A. from the University of Winnipeg. John continued to embrace the academic life at McMaster University in Hamilton, earning his PHD in English Literature. Following a stint as a professor at the University of Manitoba, John shifted gears and embarked on a short career in journalism at The Alberta Report, covering the pre-merger Edmonton Oilers and a 17-year-old Wayne Gretzky.

Ever restless and relentlessly inquisitive, John abandoned the life of a scribe and truly found his calling studying medicine back at McMaster, graduating in the class of 1983. He established a family practice in Toronto’s west end and worked in emergency rooms across the city through 1998. He and Lynne lived and practiced in the Wellington County Elora/Fergus area for more than 10 years before returning to Toronto and moving into their Leaside home. In recent years, John worked at Humber River Hospital and a clinic in Scarborough and had found a second wind, invigorated by his latter day role as mentor to young MDs and Physician Assistants, eager to share his vast knowledge and experience with a new generation. He also had recently reignited a special relationship with his Martin acoustic guitar, a lifelong companion, and even started to expand his picking palette to include 12-string and classical guitar. John’s loss will be profoundly felt by Lynne and the rest of our family. But John’s legacy remains a healthy, enduring force in countless other families who benefited from his decades of thorough and compassionate care. And man, did he love his little Boston terrier ‘Fenway’ . . .

A Funeral Mass will be held in ST. ANSELM CATHOLIC CHURCH, (Bayview and Millwood Roads) on Thursday, December 8th at 2 p.m.
