Notes for Walter WENDLAND

Walter was a baker, living in Ottawa (just down the street from his soon to be bride) at the time of his marriage. Witnesses were Mr. and Mrs. Edward Marks of Ottawa. The ceremony was performed by W.H. Raney.

Walter joined the military for World War 1, which describes him as having hazel eyes, being of hearthy complexion, and blonde hair. He was 5 ft 9&3/4” tall, and had a harelip scar. He was accepted as being fit for duty on February 22, 1915, in Ottawa.

He died in action with the Canadian Infantry (Eastern Ontario regiment), with the rank of Lance Corporal. Actually, he was reported wounded and missing, and then for official purposes he is presumed to have died on October 30, 1917. The notification to his wife shows that she lived at 240 Beatrice Street in Toronto at the time.
