Went west at some point, and was never heard from again by the family. Possibly joined the army. Going by 1901 and 1911 census, he headed out west sometime between these years. He is listed as John M McLeod in 1901 census.

There is a John McLeod, listed as born Mar 1889, single, listed in the Calgary 1911 census in district 38 (which is blocks 57 to 66 inclusive of 4th street west) as a lodger in household #104 that looks to be a good candidate.
