Notes for George HOLLEY

Moved west around 1900 to Kamloops area. Homseteaded in 3 places: Rose Hill, Ducks, Heffley Creek. Have picture of him with horses that says he lived in Vinsulla, an unincorporated town just north of Heffley Creek.

His father’s obituary in 1917 mentioned that George lived “in the West”.

Death date confirmed by BC Vital Statistics record.

From his nephew’s (Elmer Howard) family history:

He was also a bachelor, but not so shy or retiring as was Samuel. He left his native Ontario in 1900 and has made his home, as you may know, in and around Kamloops. He was a great little man. Although he never was very big, it took a mighty good man to keep near him at a days work, He farmed or ranched most of his life. I believe that he proved up three homesteads (that is what he told me and I have no reason to doubt his word), one homestead on Rose Hill, one at Ducks, and one at Heffley Creek. When he had work to do, he did it well and quickly. When he wanted to rest, he turned his stock (two horses) out to pasture, and went away for a month or so on holiday. When he was hungry he took plenty time to cook, eat, and wash the dishes. When he was sick he made a brew of bark, herbs, Oregon grapes etc. and cured himself. I saw him in the fall of ‘59, and he was as spry as a young colt. I get letters from him regularly. He writes and reads without the aid of glasses. He enjoys his meals as he always has, but does not eat meat the past year or so.

His death certficate states that he had lived in BC for 67 years at the time of his death, and in Kamloops for 10. So, he moved to BC around 1898, and Kamloops around 1955. It also says his father John was born in Toronto, although I think that is incorrect.
