Notes for Samuel BOWLES

From his grandson’s (Elmer Howard) family history:

Grandfather, Samuel Bowles, was of Irish parentage, and born in Albion County, Ontario. (1825-1903, I think). I do not know of anything of his parents other than they were Irish. I never heard mother speak of them.Grandfather Bowles was a rugged little man, could lick his weight in wild cats after he had a nip or two. I have heard that he and a neighbour used to frequently clean out the barroom of guests when they were properly organized. As I remember him he wore a whisker, had very little hair which was snow white, carried a cane, wore spectacles and worked continuously all his waking hours. He used to take me with him frequently on the 12th of July and buy me sweets. Occasionally he would come to visit us, and, as we lived about seven miles away, he would always walk to our place, stay a couple of days, then walk home. He would not think of having someone take him in the buggy as that would be a waste of time. I do not believe he was ever ten miles away from the farm, which he cleared with his trusty axe. He worshipped my mother whom he called Margaret Ann, and when he was on his deathbed would have none other care for him. He died from the effects of a broken leg, aged seventy-eight.

1881 census shows a Jane Bowles (5 years old), that is probably one of the 2 youngest daughters.
