Notes for Alphons LAENGER


Owned butcher shop in Wadena, and then one in Lintlaw. On his Polish birth certificate, his name is spelled “Alfons Lenger”.

His obituary in the Wadena News incorrectly has his birth date as March 21, 1904.

That obituary read:

“ALPHONS LAENGER, 79 YEARS, BURIED IN WADENA

Funeral service was held in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Wadena on Friday, Nov. 25, for Alphons Laenger, 79, of Wadena, who died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 1983.

Mr. Laenger was born March 21, 1904 (sic), in Lodz, Poland, and was married there on Dec. 30, 1928 to Pauline Freginger who survives him at Wadena. The couple has two sons, George Laenger, of Red Deer, Alta. and Edward Laenger of Gravelbourg, Sask.

Mr. Laenger received his education in Poland and became a butcher and master sausage maker. The family first lived in Canada in 1948 in the Lintlaw district and took up residence in Wadena in 1958 when Mr. Laenger operated a meat market in downtown Wadena. Mr. and Mrs. Laenger retired in Wadena after 12 years of business.

He was active in the programs of the Senior Citizens Drop-in Centre at Wadena and spent many afternoons there taking part in their table games, etc.

Rev. Rick Sauer conducted the funeral service and the honorary pallbearers were old friends, Arnold Young, Fred Selch and Arnold Flath. Officiating actively were Ron Young, Bruce Selch, Richard Selch, Vic McCarron, Leslie Young and Alving Ziola.

Internment, with Narfason’s Funeral Chapel in charge, was in the Wadena Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife Pauline; two sons and their wives, and four grandchildren, one grandson and three granddaughters, and a sister, Mrs. Clara Young of Waneeda Park Lodge, Wadena.

Members of the Drop-in Center served refreshments at the centre following the service at the Lutheran Church.”

Alphons served in World War II as a butcher and cook, in both Poland and Holland.
