Notes for Edward H. OWENS

Lived in Fitzroy,ON. Was a carpenter as of his son’s birth in 1879. Moved to Chesterville district in Manitoba in 1876, by oxen from Owen Sound, ON.

They were in Fitzroy, ON in 1881 census, so above info is wrong on the year. All 4 kids were born by this time.

His entry in the Cartright history book says he was born in 1844. It also says that they moved to Manitoba in 1881, travelling by oxcart from Emerson, MB. They homesteaded in the Chesterville district on NW 1/4, 2-1-15. It mentions that he was buried in the old burying grounds in John Wallace’ pasture. The remains were moved to the Pioneer Plot in Cartwright Cemetery in 1962.

By the 1891 census, they are in the Derby area of Manitoba (Edward, his wife Margaret, and kids Robert, William, Thomson and Ida). Mary “Mamie” must have already married, or stayed in Ontario longer to get married, perhaps?
