Notes for John Thomas Sr. THOMAS

Was a governor of one of the Hudson Bay Company’s Posts. A family history of him mentions that he employed by the Hudson Bay Company in the early 1780’s, and that he originally came from Wales. It also mentioned that he had 8 children, of which only 3 came to Canada (the reamainder stayed in England). Two daughters (Mrs. Spence of Ottawa & Mrs. Foy of Round Lake), and one son Charles (born at Moose Factory, Hudson Bay, Canada).

This contradicts both Barb’s research, and history of him on this site: http://www.redriverancestry.ca/THOMAS-JOHN-1751.php. Since this more closely corroborates with Barb’s research, I am going with it (though keeping the note above about England-born children).

John signed his first contract with the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1769, in London. He sailed to Moose Factory (then Moose Fort) aboard the ship Seahorse that same year. He served as a writer there until 1774, after which he became a “Second”, until 1777. He then went to establish Michipicoten, staying at Missinaibi Lake through 1778. He became the Master of Wapiscogamy House in 1778-1779, and then Second from 1779-1782. He returned to Moose Fort as Chief until 1789. He returned to England that year due to ill health (on the same ship), and returned to Moose Fort the following year on the ship King George, and became Chief again until 1800. After that he stayed as Chief, returning to England a couple of times, and resigned in 1813. He stayed in Moose Factor until the following year, and then settled in Vaudreuil County, Quebec, leaving June 24, 1814, and stayed there until his death.
