Notes for Walker JOHNSON

Name and marriage date from Manitoba Vital Statistics record. Verified by Manitou Mercury April 14, 1898 newspaper clipping (which states they were married in Manitou on April 12th, not Morden on April 11th as the vital statistics record mentioned). They were married by Reverend Mr. Litch of Morden. The newspaper article spells his last name as Johnston, not Johnson (twice).

In the thank your for help when his daughter died (from the August 23, 1900 Manitou Sun), it is mentioned that Walker was not able to make it home in time for his daughter’s funeral, being in “Dakota” at the time (not sure if North or South). There last name is back to “Johnson” in this case.

There is a “W. Johnson”, a boarder, in the 1900 US Census for North Dakota (done June 2nd and 4th, 1900), in the Raritan township (South of Valley City). If this is him, he was one of 6 boarders at the home of Ale and Annie White, and, his occupation was teamster, and Ale White was a Rural Road contractor (I presume that means building roads).

Walker, his wife and daughter moved to the USA in the early 1900’s. At some point before 1910, he passed away (Zenie is shown in the 1910 Minneapolis phone book as “wid Walker”, which means widowed, husband named Walker).

The 1908 Minneapolis directory does have a Walker Johnson listed, with this entry: “Johnson Walker pooltndr H M Weiser”. If this is him, he worked at a pool hall called H M Weiser (which was located in the Brunswick Hotel). No address is listed.

There does not appear to be a Walker Johnson listed in the 1907 Minneapolis directory.

He does have a tombstone in Manitou, Manitoba, beside his wife, daughter, and father/mother-in law.
