From her nephew’s (Elmer Howard) family history:

“Barbara married John freeman and settled in Michigan, U.S.A. and raised four children: Edgar, Horace, Gertrude, and Minnie. I last saw them when a boy of nine or ten years of age. They were owners and manufacturers of the freeman Shoe Co., Beliot, Wisconsin. I had a letter from Edgar in the 1940’s and he gave me a sort of a resume of the family. They used to visit my mother quite often at her home in Holland Centre, usually drove up in a big limousine bossed by a nigger man.”
