Notes for John MCNABB

Marriage date and place from familysearch.org.

Birthplace from Carol Chenier.

They are in the township of Beverly (county of Wentworth) in the 1861 census. John is listed as a blacksmith from Scotland, who got married in 1856. Grace and Cecilia are with them at this time, and their last name is spelled McNab. They are living in a 1 story frame house at the time.

In the 1871 census, he and the family are living in Scarborough, Ontario. He is listed as a Blacksmith. The census was taken April 8th, 1871.

Came to Manitoba in 1878 and homesteaded the S.W. of 7-3-6 in the Thornhill area. (from Thornhill history book). The rest of his family came out the following spring by way of Detroit and Fisher’s Landing by Red River boat to Emerson, and by livery to Nelsonville. They were living by Walton,ON.

1st Burial at Knightcot Cemetery, before it was actually surveyed. His original tombstone is very hard to read (without using the chalk trick).

The dedication/history stone in the Thornhill cemetery mentions that he was buried there in 1879 (although it calls him Walton McNabb - perhaps that was his middle name?), and that the land for it was bought from Thomas Gillett in 1888, and that the cemetery was called “Knightcott Burying Ground”.
