Notes for Richard Edgar “Edgar” FREEMAN


In the 1910 census, he was boarding at the same place in Milwaukee as his brother Horace.

In the 1930 census, Richard, Irene and there 4 kids were all living in Beloit, Wisconsin. They also had a housekeeper name Amy L. Robison (age 49) from Nova Scotia, living with them.

He became a naturalized citizen September 27, 1940 in a court in Janesville, Wisconsin. Witnesses were W.H. Arnold and H. A. Von Oven, both of Beloit.

Was the co-founder of Freeman Shoes in Beloit, Wisconsin, along with his brother Horace Cleveland. He had at least one patent for a shoe lift. The last 5 years of his life, he was wintering in St. Petersburg, Florida, which is where he passed away Feb. 7, 1949 (having just arrived 10 days before).

At the time of his death, he was the chairman of the board of the Freeman Shoe Company, vice president of the Warren Electric Brake Company, a director of the Beloit State Bank, and a partner in the Dixon Cut Sole Company (in Dixon, Illinois).
