Notes for Samuel “Sam” MOLBERG


Original name in Sweden Sven Olaf Peterson, changed when they went to the USA (brother and cousin in Denver).

Was selling weaving shuttles house to house in Finland at the age of 15. Emigrated to USA in 1887, coming to South Dakota and later Denver, Colorado.

Married in a double wedding ceremony (along with Anna’s brother Nicholas).

After getting married, they lived at Huron,SD, where Samuel worked for the railroad. They then moved to Rutland, ND in the spring of 1899, where the homesteaded and built a sod house.

In 1904, he homesteaded SW28-5-10 near Midale,SK, and brought his family up in 1905. The house was not finished, and the family spent Christmas Eve with Reverend Ole Sutherland, and then they stayed at the Peterson home until spring 1906.

Later in 1906, Sam purchased NE22-5-11 to be closer to the school for their children.

They are in the 1906 census in the Qu’Appelle district, sub-district 9.

In 1909 he sold the homesteads at Midale and Rutland, and went into a partnership in a general store in Mandan,ND. They moved back in 1910 to Midale,SK.

Lived in Midale,SK (between Weyburn and Estevan in southeastern SK).

He was Secretary-Treasurer for Cymni No. 36 RM for over 30 years, including WWI and the Great Depression.

From wikipedia entry for Midale:On July 5, 1937, during the great depression (and drought), Samuel Molberg recorded the highest temperature ever recorded in Canada at 113 degrees Fahrenheit (45 degrees Celsius)

Was acting Secretary-Treasurer for Midale 1942 and November 1944-April 1946
