Notes for Robert BARCLAY

Lived next to Charles James Storey in June 5, 1916 census (W1, Twp 3, Rg 7), with his wife and 3 children.

Specific info from Manitoba Historial Society website:

Bought farmland in Manitoba on August 5, 1879 from his brother James, who had purchased it as Crown land in 1877. He was an elder in the Prebyterian Church. Originally emigrated to Guelph, Ontario.

Unless there is a misprint in the Darlingford II history book, his gravestone says he was born in 1846. A family history written in 1979 (for the 100th anniversary of him getting land in Manitoba), has him born in 1844.

A story passed down was that Robert, “in 1879, had a chance meeting with a determined young lady on a horse. The young lady had been knocked off her horse but had quickly got back on the horse and regained control. Robert Barclay fell in love with this determined Jesse Johnson and they were married in the same year.”

When Robert and Jessie first came to Manitoba, they stayed with Peter and Josephine Stewart.

In 1890, Robert donated an acre of land on which the school (called Barclay school) was built, with the first school term starting in 1891. The minimum enrollment for a school at the time was 7 students - since there were only 6, Robert’s son Robert William ended up going, even though he was only 4. The first teacher was a Miss Hopkirk.

Robert retired from farming in 1920.
