Notes for Mary Jane SAVAGE

Her family immigrated to Quebec around 1823.After her husband died (when they were living in Ontario), her and her kids moved to Manitoba around 1878.

In the 1871 census, her children William (28), Thomas(23), Ellen (shown as Helen in 1861) (20), James (16), Phoebe (spelled Phiby,13) are living with her.

In the 1891 (taken April 30) census, she is living with her son Jame’s family in the South Dufferin Sub-district of the Selkirk District.

Her birtdate is from the 1901 census for Morden, Manitoba. At that time, she was living with her daughter Jane’s family in the town.

Mary Jane’s obituary from the Morden Empire, April 10, 1902:

“Mrs. Cowan, relict of the late Jno. Cowan, died in her 84(th) year last Saturday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Broadbent, near Thornhill. Four months ago she had a paralytic stroke and has been confined to her bed every since. The funeral ceremony was conducted by Rev. J.H. Borthwick and Rev. Hughes on Monday. Mary Jane Savage was born near Market Hill, Ireland. When five year’s old, she with her parents, came to Canada, settling in Huntingdon county, province of Quebec. There in after years she married John Cowan. In 1889 they moved to Huron county (Ontario), where Mr. Cowan died. Twenty-four years ago the family and mother landed in old Nelson, taking up land in the Thornhill district where they all reside. The family survive their parents. There are five boys, Edward and William settled near Miami, Thos., John and James near Thornhill. There are four daughters, Mrs. McGraven still residing in Huron Co., Mrs. Wm. Broadbent, Mrs. John Broadbent and Mrs. Jos. Hoskins, all residing in Thornhill district. Mrs. Cowan was a consistent member of the methodist Church. As she developed from childhood into mature womanhood, that faith beame a necessary part of her life and action which graces supported her while passing the shores dividing the known from the unknown world.”

Please note: Some of the above information does not makes sense; if they moved to Manitoba “24 years ago”, they moved around 1877/1878, which makes the year they move to Huron much earlier. Since Mary Jane and kids show up in Huron County in the 1861 and 1871 censuses, I believe that should be 1859. Living next to them is the Broadbent familes, 2 of which married some of Mary Jane’s children.
