Notes for Walter Edwin ARNST

Walter’s obituary from an April, 2014 issue of the Nipawin Journal newspaper:

ARNST, Walter Edwin - 88, passed away peacefully on April 25th, 2014 at Pineview Lodge. He had been diagnosed with cancer three years ago. Walter was born in Rosthern, SK, to Peter and Anna Arnst (nee Gable) on October 20th, 1925. In 1929 the family moved to the Redwood District, where Walter attended school to grade 8. He completed grade 9 and 10 at Central School in Nipawin. In 1944 the family settled in the Moose Plains district, where Walter resided until May 2013. Walter married Myrtle Parkinson on June 30th, 1953 and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last June with family and friends. Walter loved to work and always had a project on the go. He farmed all his life and helped his sons where he could. His perfect day would be to cultivate 80 acres with a 16ft heavy duty cultivator and no cab on the tractor. He worked many winters in the bush with his chainsaw and did this up to three years ago when he realized he just didn’t have the strength anymore. Once he retired from active farming he kept busy with his garden. He was always one of the first to have his potatoes planted. In his later years he developed a daily routine that you could set your watch by. The day always started with the early morning trip to the coffee shop. He was an early riser and was usually waiting at the coffee shop for it to open. He always said that if he didn’t get out to his truck in time, he was sure it would leave without him. In the afternoon at 2:00 he took his truck for a “walk”, and was home by 3. Walter was pre-deceased by his parents Peter and Anna, sister Helen Tonks and brother Art. Walter is survived by his wife Myrtle, sons Phil, Larry (Debbie) and grand-daughters Jennifer (Devin), Krysta (Kurtis) and great grandson Sawyer. A private family service will be held at a later date. Memorial tributes may be made to the Pineview Lodge Activity Fund. Condolences to the family may be given at www.coventryfuneralservices.ca. The family placed their trust with COVENTRY FUNERAL SERVICES of Nipawin, SK 306-862-4233
