In the 1850 USA census, Samuel and his wife are living in Jackson, Fountain County, Indiana, along with 2 children. He is listed as a farmer, age 24, from North Carolina. Catherine McSpadden, age 66 (birthplace unknown), and a James McSpadden, age 17 (birthplace Indiana) live next to Samuel and his wife, and appear to have followed him to Iowa afterwards. Perhaps she is a grandmother to Samuel?

At the time of the 1860 USA census, Samuel and his family were in Penn Township,Johnson County in Iowa. Along with Samuel, his wife, and there 4 kids, there is also an 80 year old woman (born around 1780, place unknown) named Catherine McSpade with them. A relative?

There is Civil War record for a Samuel L. Myers from North Carolina.He was a private in the Confederate army, 1st regiment, Northa Carolina infantry for just over 6 months. Not positive this is the same man. There is another record for a Samuel L. Myers serving for the Confederacy in 1862, in the Fourth Cavalry (59th State Troops).

In the 1870 USA census, the family is still in Johnson County, but now in the Madison township. Samuel is shown as a farme. Catherine is now listed as 88 years old, from Maryland, and blind. Last name is pretty well unreadable.

By the 1880 USA census (they are now listed in Shelby, Shelby County, with Samuel still listed as farmer), they are showing Samuel’s parents as both being born in North Carolina. By this time, only his wife Cynthia, and daughters Eunice H. and Sarah C. are living with them. They also have a hired hand named John Nelson, aged 20 from Denmark.

In the 1885 Iowa State census, Samuel and Cynthia have Eunice, Sarah, and Samuel living with them, along with a 25 year old farmer named George E. Simmers (single at this time)

In the 1895 Iowa State census, Samuel is in Shelby Township, a Lutheran farmer, with his wife Cynthia (mis-spelled “Cinthy J.”), along with Eunice (who is widowed by now), and Eunice’s 2 kids.
