Marriage announcement from The Lanark Era, December 7,1898:At Allen’s Mills, (McLaren’s Depot), November 30th, Miss Annie Allen, daughter of Mr. Jas. Allen, was wed to Mr. John D. Miller, also of that place. The bride’s sister, Miss Blanche Allen, assisted. Among the guests were Mrs. A. Stewart and Mr. R.A. Duncan also of McLaren’s Depot.

John Duncan Millar

Widespread regret was caused by the death on Saturday, November 6, of John Duncan Millar, after a week’s illness of pleuro-pneumonia. Mr. Millar was born at Snow Road, April 16, 1874, son of James Millar Sr. and his wife, the late Isabella Duncan. He was a life-long resident of the community, having bought the homestead from his father when young man. On November 30, 1898, he married Anni May Allan, and to them were born twelve children: Albert and Vietta at home; (Mabel) Mrs. Thomas Izatt, Elphin; Raymond, of Perth; Herbert, of Manotick; Minerva and (Nellie) Mrs. Ross Wells, Kingston; Allan, Earl and (Isabel) Mrs. J. H. Jamieson, of Timmins; Hazel and Donald, deceased. Besides his wife and family he is survived by his aged father, who is his 90th year, and two brothers, Thomas, of Snow Road, and William, of Kingston, also one sister, Belle, Mrs. William J. McNeill, of Detroit. Two brothers, James and Fleetwood, predeceased him. Nine grandchildren also survive.

Largely attended, the funeral took place on Tuesday , November 9, form his late resisdence to Snow Road Presbyterian Church. Rev. K. McCaskill conducted the service. Deceased was a member of the I.O.O.F. for years, having received his 25 year jewel in 1933. Fellow members of Cornucopia Lodge No. 299 showed their respect and esteem by attending in a body and conducting a short service at Crawford’s Cemetery, where burial took place. Pallbearers were Brother Oddfellows - John Gemmill, David Gemmill, James Lett, John Trombley, Walter Geddes and william Geddes. Flower bearers were six nephews, Arthur Clark, Ralph Geddes, Billy Millar, Ernie Millar, Bert Millar and Max Millar.

Beautiful floral tribtues were received from the following: Wife and family; Allan, Isabel and Earl, Timmins; Mr. and Mrs. William Millar and family, Kingston; Mr. Thomas Millar and family; Mr. and MRs. J. A. Geddes and family; I.O.O.F. Bell Telephone Co; John Bloedon, Timmins; Mr. and Mrs. McVicker and family, Kingston; Mr. and Mrs. H. McNevin and family, Kingston; Mr. and Mrs. R.W. Davy, Kingston.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Jamieson, (Anne and Barbara, Mr. and Mrs. Allan Millar and Mr. Earl Millar, all of Timmins; Mr. Herbert Millar, of Manotick; Mr. and Mrs. Ross Wells and Charlie, Miss Minerva Millar, Mr. Leo McVicker, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. R. Millar, Isobel, Alice and Billy, Mr. Roy Allan, Miss Lois Allan, Mr. H Novin, all of Kingston; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. J. McNeil, of Detroit; Mr. Arthur Clark, of Brighton, Mr. Ernie Millar, of Toronto; also numerous friends from Smiths Falls, Perth and the surrounding district.
