Robert was educated in Eganville and Renfrew, and obtained his M.A. from Bishops College, Lennoxville. He served in a number of parishes in Ontario and Quebec, and was pastor at St. John’s from 1879 – 1890. While serving in Eganville he became fluent in German, to better serve the Protestant settlers from Germany.
