At the time of the 1921 census, James and the family were renting a home on Leonard Street in Ottawa. He is listed as a plumber. A family history mentions that he and his brother Walter were planning to go into business together, but they both volunteered for World War I. Douglas was rejected due to being flat footed, while Walter ended up joining, getting killed in France near the end of 1916.
