John was a private for the Union army (in the 142nd Regiment, New York Infantry, E company) during the Civil War.

John and his family is shown as being in Oswegatchie, New York in the 1870 New York census. He is shown as a Teamster.

In the 1880 USA census, he is in Ogdensburg, New York, and listed as a bill poster.

The 1900 USA census for Ogdensburg has him being born in 1884.

He is still listed as a bill poster in the 1905 New York census (and still living in Ogdensburg). By this time, he has remarried, and has his son John, and grandson Miller, living with him. Also his daughter Emma, and her son Richard.
