Mary was Cree. Her last name has also been spelled Meenish. Her relationship with John Thomas, Jr. started around 1806. She is thought to have been born at Rupert’s House (now Waskaganish, PQ), or perhaps Moose Factory (both on the southern part of James Bay).

After her husband’s death in 1816, she returned to Rupert’s House, with two of her children.
