Obituary:

“Leona Helgeson, 96, Iola, a town of New Hope native, died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, at Iola Living Assistance in Iola.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at Northland Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dan Somers officiating. Interment will be in Northland Lutheran Cemetery in the Town of Harrison in Waupaca County.

Visitation will be at the church from noon Saturday until the services.

Memorials may be given in her memory to the Iola Living Assistance.

Mrs. Helgeson was born Jan. 30, 1918, in the town of New Hope in Portage County, a daughter of the late Martin and Carrie (Johnson) Satre.

She was married to Joseph Helgeson Oct. 10, 1940, in Iowa. He died Oct. 1, 1962.

As a young woman, she moved to Chicago with her sister and worked as a nanny.

She would later work at Zwickers Knitting Mill and then as a cook for the Iola Nursing Home for many years.

She made lefse with Sylvia Olson for many years and provided them to local people.

Survivors include one son, James (Marcia) Helgeson, one daughter, Joan (Rudy) Seul; one sister, Donna Locey; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Joel “Tom” Helgeson; and three sisters, Eunice Barta, Alma Dobbe and Lillian Martin.”
