Gauntlet is the 2nd machine language game that Britt Monk made for the Coco (the first being Breakaway which I have been unable to find; if you have a copy, please email me) and one of the very few 3rd party machine language games that ran on a 4K Coco 1. Coming out less than a year after the Coco became available to the public, the game requires an analog joystick as you can vary your speed by moving the joystick up and down, and the left to right controls your position, not just direction of movement (similar to Space Assault). The game is timed, and you get a rating (based on your score) at the end if you make it that far; you only have one ship so if you collide with an alien or the asteroids (of which there are two sizes), the game is over. The aliens can fire at you until you hit them once, but colliding with their remains will still kill you (you can keep shooting to "clean them up" same with the asteroids. You only have 100 missiles though, and hitting asteroids gives you no points, so try to save them for aliens which are worth more. You also get points for how far you progress, so increasing your ships speed gives you more points. The game has good sound considering the 4K RAM limitation.

It was announced in the May 1982 issue of Rainbow magazine (in the Pipeline column) that Britt would no longer sell Gauntlet directly himself, as Avalon Hill was going to re-release it under their name.
