Ruptus is one of cross platform games (dozens and dozens of platforms!) put out by Japanese developer Inufuto using their C like cross-platform engine (called "CATE"), targeted at many 8 bit systems. Ruptus is loosely based on an arcade game Bosconian, in which you fly through different levels which have various bases that the player has to destroy (by shooting them 4 times each). The player has a radar to see where the bases are, and there are sometimes energy barriers protecting them; these you have to shoot at their end points to destroy them. There are also aliens flying around and firing at you (very few of them at early levels, but there gets to be quite a lot of them in later levels), and they (and their shots) stay active even if you maneuver in such a way as to push them offscreen. Like Bosconian, the layout of where the bases are changes on each level, but each level always has them in the exact same spots. There are some differences to the arcade original, though: the area shown in the radar wraps around on all 4 sides, and sometimes when you kill an aliens it will leave a "1UP" bonus, which will give you a free man if you run over it.

As with Inufuto's other games, this game is quite enjoyable, and the difficulty ramps up gradually at first and then picks up pace later. The Coco 1/2 version uses PMODE 3 (128 x 192 with 4 colors), while the Coco 3 uses the 16 color mode so the graphics are much improved. There is also an MC-10 version available if you have an MC-10 or Alice with at least a 16K RAM expansion (or higher). Joyticks are NOT required; you can play the entire game on keyboard. Because it uses a cross platform language and engine, it's not as fast as a pure ML game would be; but it is much faster than BASIC and includes some simple but effective sound effects and a little bit of single voice music between levels and when the player starts a ship, or dies.
