There is also another Cowan family living next to John and Mary Jane in Huntingdon, Quebec in the 1852 census, that may be John’s mother (widowed) and siblings. If so, here mother’s name was Ann, and siblings are Edward, George, Allio (?, female), Mary A. and George (who appears to be a grandson, judging by the age difference).

There is a John Cowan listed in the 1852 census for Canada East/Ceauharnois county/12 Hemmingford township) as age 39, a farmer born in Ireland. He has a wife Mary J listed as also being born in Ireland, age 36. If this is the right family, then they had 6 children living with them at the time: Edward age 13, William, age 11, James age 9, Mary age 7, Thomas(?) age 5 and Alice age 3.

There is a tombstone at the Kinburn Cemetery in Huron County,Ontario for a John Cowan, which says he died Mar 13, 1865, aged 55, a native of County Armagh, Ireland, that is quite likely him.
