Francis came to Hawaii on the Makura, sailing from Victoria (BC, I presume) on January 2, 1909, and arriving in Honolulu on the 9th. It shows that he had been living in Inverness, Scotland up to this time, and that he was an accountant. His mother was living at 84 Telford Road in Inverness at the time. He had never been to the USA before this. It mentions that he was going join his brother John. He is listed as 5’10”, dark complexion, with dark hair and brown eyes.
Francis and his brother are living together in Hakalau, Hawaii in the 1910 census. It shows Francis immigrated in 1909. Another record verifies this, as he came across in the Makura.
Francis registered for World War I while in Honokaa, Hawaii, on July 31, 1917. It shows him as being tall, medium build, with grey eyes and brown hair. He was a naturalized citizen by this time, and was working as bank cashier at First Bank of Hilo, Ltd. He had served as a private in the infantry for 4.5 years previous to this, serving for Great Britain.
Francis and Jean are living together in Honokaa, Hawaii in the 1920 census.
The family took a trip to the mainland in 1924. There is a record of Francis, his wife Jean, and daughter Margaret coming back, boarding the Matsonia in San Francisco on October 1, 1924 and arriving in Honolulu on October 7.
The 1940 census for Honokaa (taken April 14) shows him as a bank manager.
Francis is also registered for World War II. He was working at the Bank of Hawaii, in Honokaa at the time. This happened in 1942, but I don’t have a specific date.
His tombstone shows that he was a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army, but I am not sure if this is referring to his World War I, or II, service.
