Moptown Hotel is a set of 3 different logic & pattern recognition based educational games for children 9 & up. The characters that the player is playing with are called Moppets (where the "Mop" in "Moptown" comes from), of which there are two types: Gribbits (with tails) and Bibbits (with large feet). Each of these have some other physical characteristics: They can be fat or thin, tall or short, red or blue (or any combination). The games are based on these attributes.
The 1st game is called Clubhouse and is for one player at a time. The player needs to guess the "rule" to allow Moppets into the Clubhouse, based on which type and their physical characteristics. This game has two levels of play: Single Rule or Double Rule, which is basically how many physical characteristics have to match. As the player guesses, they are either put into the Clubhouse (they are a member) or marked with an X (they are not a member). The object is to figure out the single or double rule(s) for them to be members in as few tries as possible.
The 2nd game is called Moptown Map. There is a map of 16 buildings (4x4 grid), and the player needs to figure out the rules that apply to each row and column, and play the moppets with the correct attributes into each and figure this out all 16 houses on the map. The game starts with 5 moppets already in their proper spots, giving the player some clues to figure out the row/column rules.
The 3rd game is called Moptown Hotel (the name of the full game itself), which also has a 4x4 grid (this time of rooms and floors in a hotel building), but the player now has to figure out how the moppets differ from their neighbors (once again based on rules by row/column. This game gives a score based on money made, and each time the player places a moppet that is next to other moppets, they get a dollar value based on how moppets are next to the players selection (next to one makes $10, next to two makes $20, next to three makes $30. There is also a bonus for filling all the rooms in the hotel.
An interesting historical note: The Learning Company that made these games was originally founded in 1980 by Anne McCormick, Leslie Grimm, Teri Perl and Warren Robinett (of Atari 2600 Adventure fame), and was initially partly funded by the National Science Foundation.
